Background: Lower respiratory illness is the leading cause of child death in the developing world. Despite this few reports on respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory illness disease burden exist from rural areas of the developing world, and none exist for Indonesia.

An unusual course was observed in a patient with indolent T-prolymphocytic leukaemia (T-PLL) who subsequently developed mycosis fungoides (Mf), lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) and cutaneous CD30+ anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). Polymerase chain reaction analysis demonstrated identical monoclonal T-cell receptor-beta and -gamma gene rearrangements in all the different clinical entities. Furthermore, cytogenetic studies revealed the same aberrant clone with trisomy of chromosome 8 in T-PLL and ALCL cells.

Opioid peptides are endogenous neuromodulators that play a major role in the nociceptive pathway by interacting with opioid receptors. Objectives: To assess the impact of a birth dose of hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) on the reactogenicity and immunogenicity of a novel diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP)- HepB-inactivated poliovirus (IPV)/ type b (Hib) combination vaccine administered subsequently at 2, 4 and 6 months of age.

Aquagenic urticaria is a rare disorder characterized by the occurrence of pruritus and wheals after temporary contact with water. The familial occurrence of aquagenic urticaria over 3 generations is reported here in association with familial lactose intolerance, a condition in which the enzyme lactase encoded on chromosome 2, is deficient. In two patients, a young man and his mother, we verified the appearance of pruritic hives 5 to 10 minutes after contact with water of any temperature.

The precise role that aluminum plays in local reactogenicity is not clear. We explored the relationship between rates of severe local reactions following the fourth and fifth booster doses of several diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis vaccines (DTaP) and the quantity of aluminum contained in the different vaccines. Although there was a significant relationship between higher aluminum contents and swelling reactions >50 mm after dose 5, no relationship was seen with entire thigh swelling or with swelling >50 mm after dose 4.

It is commonly accepted that thrombin exerts its proinflammatory properties through the activation of proteinase-activated receptor (PAR)-1, although two other thrombin receptors have been discovered: PAR-3 and PAR-4. In this study, we have investigated the mechanisms and the receptors involved in thrombin-induced leukocyte/endothelial cell interactions by using selective agonists and antagonists of thrombin receptors in an in vivo intravital microscopy system. Topical addition of selective PAR-1 agonists to rat mesenteric venules failed to reproduce the increased leukocyte rolling and adhesion observed after thrombin topical addition.

SALL1 was originally identified on the basis of its DNA sequence homology to the region-specific homeotic gene Sal, in Drosophila melanogaster, which acts as a downstream target of hedgehog/tumor growth factor-beta-like decapentaplegic signals. We evaluated the strategy of maternal immunization with Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) vaccine in Asian mothers, to assess potential protection of infants, including by breast milk. One hundred and fifty-seven women in the third trimester were randomized to receive a single dose of the polysaccharide Nm (n=75) or a control vaccine (n=82). Background: Epithelioid sarcoma is a soft tissue tumor rarely found centrally and even less commonly on the vulva. Vulvar sarcoma in pregnancy is also exceedingly rare with only five cases reported to date, none of which have been an epithelioid sarcoma.

Townes-Brocks syndrome (TBS) is a human genetic disorder with features including urogenital, limb, anal and cardiac malformations associated with mutations of the TBS gene, Hsal 1. To begin to understand the role of the Hsal 1 protein (p140) in both normal development and disease pathogenesis, both message and protein expression were evaluated in specific tissues associated with TBS. DNA sequence information for Hsal 1 predicts that this homeotic, Drosophila homologue (Sal) encodes a zinc-finger protein consistent with a transcription factor.

Thrombin, generated in the circulation during injury, cleaves proteinase-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) to stimulate plasma extravasation and granulocyte infiltration. However, the mechanism of thrombin-induced inflammation in intact tissues is unknown. We hypothesized that thrombin cleaves PAR1 on sensory nerves to release substance P (SP), which interacts with the neurokinin 1 receptor (NK1R) on endothelial cells to cause plasma extravasation.
