Patient satisfaction, safety, and efficacy of nurse-led compared to physician-led implantation of cardiac monitors.

Aims: Implantation of an implantable cardiac monitor (ICM) is a simple procedure, but adds significant and increasing workload to the arrhythmia service. In 2020, we established a nurse-led ICM implantation service. We aimed to analyse patient satisfaction, adverse events during implant, and ICM re-interventions with nurse-led ICM implantation (N-Implant) compared to physician-led ICM implantation (P-Implant).

Evaluation of medication reconciliation in an ambulatory setting before and after pharmacist intervention.

Objectives: To determine the accuracy of medication reconciliation in an internal medicine clinic and to evaluate pharmacist interventions targeted at improving the accuracy of medication reconciliation.

Design: Prospective case series.

Setting: Memphis, TN, from October 2007 to March 2008.

Silver as acrolein hydrogenation catalyst: intricate effects of catalyst nature and reactant partial pressures.

The hydrogenation of acrolein over pure and supported silver has been investigated with a focus on the influence of catalyst structure and reaction pressure (mbar to 20 bar range) on activity and selectivity. An onset of formation of allyl alcohol beyond 100 mbar reaction pressure (at 250 degrees C) is ascribed to a change in adsorption geometry upon increasing coverage. Smaller silver particles (in the nanometer range), the proximity of a reducible oxide component as well as high pressure lead to enhanced allyl alcohol formation; the selectivity to the other main product propionaldehyde is reduced.

Establishing a laparoscopic bariatric program in a safety net hospital.

Background: Most laparoscopic bariatric programs are situated in a community- or university-based hospital. The authors have recently initiated a program at a safety net hospital. This investigation hypothesizes that a laparoscopic bariatric program can be established at a safety net hospital with good clinical and financial results.

VDR gene polymorphisms are overrepresented in german patients with type 1 diabetes compared to healthy controls without effect on biochemical parameters of bone metabolism.

Type 1 diabetic individuals are known to develop disorders of bone metabolism resulting in osteopenia. Previous studies have suggested an influence of vitamin D receptor alleles on bone metabolism and susceptibility for type 1 diabetes mellitus. The present study was initiated to investigate the distribution of vitamin D receptor alleles in Caucasian type 1 diabetic patients and their relation to bone turnover parameters.

Validation of a new automated immunoassay for measurement of intact osteocalcin.

Bone turnover is assessed indirectly by measurement of biochemical markers of bone turnover. Osteocalcin, a 49-amino-acid protein is a major noncollagenous protein of bone matrix, synthesized by osteoblasts and odontoblasts. Various assays exist for assessment of osteocalcin and concentrations in the same serum or plasma sample may vary enormously.

Current issues in multispecialty group practice: the Lahey Hitchcock Clinic merger experience.

The merger of two large not-for-profit multispecialty group practices in 1995 forced the two founding organizations into a deeper understanding of their heritage and mission. Common features of Lahey Hitchcock and similar organizations of their vintage are discussed. Issues addressed include governance, desirable leadership characteristics and growth, "incentivizing change," and workforce planning.

Emergency service: a strategy for hospital-sponsored ambulatory care satellites.

This analysis of the overall market position of free-standing emergency care was based on a telephone survey of 300 randomly chosen households in a southeastern metropolitan area. Results show that consumer preferences for cost and convenience create a strong market for free-standing emergency facilities. Emergicare centers are in an ideal situation to capture the market for acute and minor emergency care.

Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit has a full-time, salaried medical staff. Yet its program to monitor physician recruitment and retention may interest the boards of other hospitals without a large number of salaried physicians that are engaged in recruitment activities. Key to the program is the establishment of a profile of the background characteristics of physician recruits.

1. The ant fauna of 3 islands of the Central Seychelles was studied by means of pitfall traps. The number of species and their abundances were investigated in relation to differences in island size, habitats, and microclimate conditions.

1. Twenty-five species of web-building spiders (Araneae) were studied by examining standard study areas on 5 islands of the Central Seychelles group that differ in size and degree of isolation. The number of individuals and of species on each island was correlated to the area, altitude, degree of isolation, and resource availability of the respective island.
