Herein, we report mechanistic investigations into the Cu-catalyzed three-component carboamination of alkenes with α-halo carbonyls and aryl amines via an oxocarbenium intermediate. Monitoring the reaction reveals the formation of transient atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) intermediates with both electron-neutral and deficient vinyl arenes as well as unactivated alkenes. Based on our experimental studies and density functional theory calculations, the oxocarbenium is generated through atom transfer and subsequent intramolecular substitution.

Fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) cause intestinal discomfort in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). An enzyme mix (2500 SU invertase, 2400 GalU α-galactosidase, 10,000 ALU β-galactosidase) optimized for FODMAP digestion, and/or human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) (2'-FL, DFL, and LNnT), were evaluated for effects on microbial community activity and composition in short-term colonic incubations using the fecal microbiota of four patients with IBS-D symptoms under the following test conditions: (i) FODMAP, (ii) pre-digested (with enzyme mix) FODMAP, (iii) FODMAP + HMO, and (iv) pre-digested FODMAP + HMO. Pre-digested FODMAP reduced short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production versus FODMAP; HMO restored this.

We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, RIBOGUT, to study the effect of 2 weeks supplementation with either 50 or 100 mg/d of riboflavin on (i) abundance, (ii) gut microbiota composition, (iii) short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) profiles, and (iv) the satiety and gut hormones. Neither dose of riboflavin, analyzed separately, impacted the abundance of , and only minor differences in SCFA concentrations were observed. New Cδ-H⋯O histidine hydrogen bonding interactions in various proteins are identified by neutron diffraction and computationally characterized. Neutron diffraction data shows several H-bond motifs with the Cδ-H moiety in histidine side chains, including interactions in β-sheets and with coordinated waters, mostly with histidinium and τ-tautomers. In yellow protein, an active site histidine H-bonds Cδ-H to a main chain carbonyl while the Cε-H bond coordinates a water molecule.
