It is known that information contained within the filter skirts can provide cues important to speech intelligibility. However, the role of filter slope during temporal smoothing has received little attention. In experiment 1, smoothing filter slope angle was found to have a large effect on the intelligibility of sentences represented by three amplitude-modulated sinusoids.

A new combination of methods for the localization, identification, and three-dimensional reconstruction of the sensory endings of articular afferents characterized by electrophysiology.

A combination of methods is described to identify and reconstruct corpuscular and non-corpuscular sensory endings of group II and group III nerve fibers following functional examination by electrophysiology. Afferent units activated by electrical stimulation of the medial articular nerve of the cat's knee were analyzed by single fiber recordings and characterized by their responsiveness to mechanical stimuli. The receptive fields of the units were closely demarcated by fine needles when the responses elicited by insertion of the needles were being recorded.

Biliary lithotripsy in the United States.

We have reported the case of a patient whose gallstone was completely fragmented by lithotripsy; all demonstrable particles passed completely within 36 hours. The patient required no analgesics and had no complications from the procedure. This is the first case of gallstones successfully treated solely by a combination of lithotripsy and bile acid therapy in the United States under an FDA-approved IDE protocol.

Structure of the Ss blood group antigens, II: a methionine/threonine polymorphism within the N-terminal sequence of the Ss glycoprotein.

The N-terminal amino acid sequence (residues 1--35) of the Ss sialoglycoprotein (or glycophorin B) from human erythrocyte membranes of defined Ss blood group activity was determined by manual sequencing methods, using N-terminal tryptic or chymotryptic glycopeptides and various secondary peptides. The proposed structure differs considerably from that suggested on the basis of work with glucopeptides of unknown Ss blood group activity (Furthmayr, Nature 271, 519--523, 1978). Ultrasonic diagnosis of hypernephroma extending into the inferior vena cava.

Extension of hypernephroma into the inferior vena cava was demonstrated by ultrasound. When a solid renal lesion is encountered, it is suggested that the inferior vena cava be scanned. The possible significance of gray scale scanning as a more precise diagnostic tool and its use in tumor staging are discussed.
