Mental-health, coping and support following adverse events on the work-floor : a cross-sectional study among Dutch orthopaedic surgeons.

Physicians are frequently exposed to adverse events on the work-floor, which puts them at risk for depression, anxiety- or posttraumatic stress disorder. This study aims to explore what events orthopaedic surgeons consider to have the highest emotional impact as well as support, coping strategies and mental health. A questionnaire was emailed to all members of the Dutch Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons which included resident, attending, non-practicing and retired orthopaedic surgeons.

Potential traumatic events in the workplace and depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress: a cross-sectional study among Dutch gynaecologists, paediatricians and orthopaedic surgeons.

Purpose: To evaluate whether severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Severe PPH can be experienced as a traumatic event. PTSD leads to negative mental health effects.

Complex economic activities concentrate in large cities.

Human activities, such as research, innovation and industry, concentrate disproportionately in large cities. The ten most innovative cities in the United States account for 23% of the national population, but for 48% of its patents and 33% of its gross domestic product. But why has human activity become increasingly concentrated? Here we use data on scientific papers, patents, employment and gross domestic product, for 353 metropolitan areas in the United States, to show that the spatial concentration of productive activities increases with their complexity.

Tibial component rotation in total knee arthroplasty.

Background: Both the range of motion (ROM) technique and the tibial tubercle landmark (TTL) technique are frequently used to align the tibial component into proper rotational position during total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The aim of the study was to assess the intra-operative differences in tibial rotation position during computer-navigated primary TKA using either the TTL or ROM techniques. The ROM technique was hypothesized to be a repeatable method and to produce different tibial rotation positions compared to the TTL technique.

Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections, genital symptoms and health-care seeking behaviour among HIV-negative female sex workers in Kigali, Rwanda.

Timely diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is often hampered by the lack of symptoms, inadequate diagnostics and/or poor availability, accessibility and quality of treatment in resource-limited settings. Female sex workers (FSW) are highly vulnerable for HIV and key transmitters of STIs. Among FSW (n = 400) participating in a prospective HIV incidence study in Kigali, Rwanda, only 15% (17/116) of women with laboratory-diagnosed non-ulcerative STIs at baseline reported symptoms.

Joining and leaving sex work: experiences of women in Kigali, Rwanda.

Although sex work can bring significant economic benefit there are serious downsides, not least vulnerability to adverse sexual health outcomes. Focus-groups discussions and in-depth interviews were conducted with 70 female sex workers to explore the context in which they started sex work, their motivations to leave, and their experiences of trying to leave. The pathway to becoming a sex worker was underscored by poverty, with disruptive events leading to increasing vulnerability and increasingly difficult life choices.

Background: It is well known that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is associated with subsequent wheezing episodes, but the precise natural course of wheezing following RSV LRTI is not known. This study aimed to determine the continuous development of wheezing following RSV LRTI in children up to the age of 3 years.

Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed in 140 hospitalised infants with RSV LRTI.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) is often followed by recurrent wheezing episodes during childhood. The effect of postbronchiolitis wheezing on the well-being of the child is not known. This study aimed to determine the impact of RSV LRTI hospitalization before age 13 months on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) at age 3 years.

Total knee replacement for patients with patellofemoral arthritis.

Fifty-three patients with incapacitating patellofemoral arthritis and minimal tibiofemoral changes underwent a total knee replacement. Their results were compared with the results of a concomitant series of patients with tricompartmental osteoarthritis. Preoperatively group of patients with patellofemoral arthritis had more individuals with a lateral patellar tilt and inability to climb stairs in a bipedal manner than in the group with tricompartmental arthritis.

Superolateral bone grafting for acetabular deficiency in primary total hip replacement and revision.

Dysplastic acetabula were augmented during total hip replacement by superolateral autografts. In cases of primary arthroplasty these were taken from the excised femoral head and in revision surgery from the iliac crest. Two or (usually) three small grafts were used to facilitate revascularisation; they were fixed with lag screws to the roughened iliac bone above the acetabulum.
