[Cardiac involvement within the scope of HIV-1 infection: preliminary results of echocardiography study].

The results of one- and two-dimensional echocardiography in 128 patients (117 males, 11 females; median age 37 years) who were seropositive for HIV-1 were analyzed in addition to clinical, electrocardiographic, and laboratory data. Follow-up controls are available for 51 patients over an observation period of 1 to 24 months, median 9.5 months.

Intracellular free amino acid patterns in duodenal and colonic mucosa.

We report for the first time the concentrations of free amino acids in human intestinal biopsies obtained by routinely performed endoscopy. We studied 15 medical patients with no changes of the mucosa and six HIV-infected persons with duodenitis. The mean (and SD) sum of all amino acids, taurine excepted, was 61.

Effect of molecular weight on the lymphatic absorption of water-soluble compounds following subcutaneous administration.

The lymphatic absorption of four water-soluble compounds with different molecular weights (MW) was determined by measuring their cumulative recovery in lymph draining from the site of s.c. administration in sheep.

[Early diagnostic criteria of ankylosing spondylitis in patients with acute anterior uveitis].

A group of 59 patients with acute anterior uveitis (AAU) were examined for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) according to the New York criteria und criteria for early diagnosis of AS: 17/59 (29%) presented AS according to the New York criteria: a further 13/59 (22%) were classified as having incipient AS according to the early diagnosis criteria. These findings indicate that in a group of AAU patients there are, in addition to patients with definite AS, patients with initial AS though X-rays of the sacroiliac joints are still negative or equivocal. Early diagnosis criteria seem to be useful for identification of these patients at an early stage and can be used as a major selection criterion for monitoring programs.

Quantification of the heart rate-independent vasodepressor component in carotid sinus syndrome.

In 45 patients with carotid sinus syndrome, the heart rate-independent vasodepressor component under ventricular and av-sequential pacing of the heart was investigated both in supine and in standing patients. Under both forms of pacing, the carotid pressure determination has led to a marked lowering of systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure which is significantly more pronounced under orthostasis. The blood pressure values reached both in supine and in standing patients are significantly higher under av-sequential pacing than under ventricular pacing.

[Diagnosis and clinical aspects of gastrointestinal cytomegalovirus diseases in patients with human immunodeficiency virus 1 infection].

Eleven Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 (HIV1)-infected patients (10 male, 1 female; age 23-51 years (median 36); 10 male homosexuals, 1 IV drug abuser; WR3 1 patient, WR5 5, WR6 5) with intestinal Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-manifestations were compared with a group of 78 HIV1-infected patients in respect to their clinical, immunological and virus-serological data and the results of the histological and microbiological examination of endoscopically obtained biopsies. No differences were observed on age, sex, risk of infection, stage and immunological status. Bloody diarrhea was most important in discriminating CMV-colitis and non-CMV-related intestinal manifestations.

[Diagnosis and therapy of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma].

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is an uncommon tumor with great diagnostic and therapeutic problems. Symptoms, clinical features and course of the disease are described in three patients which were seen at our hospital within the last years. At the beginning there are often severe weight loss, malaise and sometimes fever of unknown origin.

Treatment of renal anemia with rhEPO (120 U/kg body weight/hemodialysis) in transfusion-dependent patients on maintenance hemodialysis led to an increase in blood pressure, regional peripheral resistance and whole blood viscosity. Our results are in agreement with earlier findings that partial correction of renal anemia results in hemodynamic changes characterized by a fall in cardiac output together with an increase in blood pressure due to increased vascular resistance. The increase in whole blood viscosity correlated with the increase in regional peripheral resistance but not with the increase in mean arterial blood pressure.

A new heterotopic callosal projection of primary visual cortex in the monkey, Callithrix jacchus.

A callosal projection of area 17 upon the dorsomedial visual area in the marmoset monkey was demonstrated by means of retrograde transport of neuronal tracers. The projection was restricted to those regions representing the vertical meridian in the two areas. This finding, and the data of other authors, indicate that the monkey area 17 projects transcallosally onto homotopic and several heterotopic targets.

[A new instrument for computerized tomography-guided brain biopsy].

Dose-response study of omeprazole on meal-stimulated gastric acid secretion and gastrin release.

In a placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover, and randomized trial, the effect of 30, 60, and 90 mg of oral omeprazole on peptone-stimulated gastric acid secretion and synchronously measured gastrin release was studied in 8 healthy subjects. Peptone-stimulated acid output was reduced dose-dependently by 42%, 80%, and 92%, respectively. In spite of a short mean plasma half-life of 52 min, the inhibitory effect lasted for greater than 4.

[Urine pseudocyst following multiple injury with closed subpelvic ureteral rupture in childhood].
