Marjolin's ulcer. Report of two cases and evidence that Marjolin did not describe cancer arising in scars of burns.

Two patients who developed malignant neoplasms in scars (Marjolin's ulcers) are described in this report. The first patient developed a squamous cell carcinoma in the site of a chronic, draining urinary fistula. The malignancy later metastasized.

Erythrocyte membrane alterations as the basis of chlorate toxicity.

The effects of sodium chlorate and of sodium nitrite on human erythrocytes were studied in vitro. Nitrite rapidly oxidised haemoglobin and glutathione; reduction of methaemoglobin (Hbi) by methylene blue was complete during 3 h of incubation with nitrite. With chlorate, a concentration-dependent lag phase was seen before Hbi was formed.

Immune complexes in juvenile chronic arthritis.

Twenty children with juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) and two children with SLE were investigated as to the existence of immune complexes in a long-term survey over 24 months. Two different methods were applied, a solid phase C1q RIA and a polyethylene glycol precipitation test. Detection of immune complexes was compared to the course of the disease and other laboratory data.

[Enzyme breakdown of immune complexes].

4 types of immune complexes according to the Heidelberger curve were prepared as an in vitro model for immune complexes in rheumatoid arthritis and collagen diseases. Immune complexes of high and moderate antigen excess and immune complexes of high and moderate antibody excess were incubated with increasing concentrations of a mixture of enzymes or papain or pancreatin. The concentration of immune complexes was determined by a solid phase C1q radioimmunoassay before and after incubation.

Improved method to measure erythrocyte filtration times increased extremely by chlorate.

A method is presented that allows the measurement of erythrocyte filtration times that are extremely prolonged. Filtration times through polycarbonate sieves are increased by a factor of 40 after 2 h incubation with 30 mM sodium chlorate. This increase in red cell rigidity offers an explanation for the haemolysis observed in chlorate poisoning in vivo.

Influence of x-ray treatment on antigen-induced experimental arthritis.

Six groups of 3 rabbits each were immunised with ovalbumin and received one intra-articular injection of antigen. The animals of 3 groups received local x-ray irradiation of 600 rads for 8 minutes to the right knee joint 12 days after the intra-articular challenge. Animals of the other 3 groups were not irradiated.

Intravenous cannulas. Survey of their use in patients undergoing elective surgery.

A study of the complications associated with use of intravenous cannulas was conducted in 254 patients undergoing elective surgery at Westmead Centre. Four brands of cannula were studied. Surflo, Jelco, Dwellcath and Abbocath.

Demonstration of C1q - binding to collagen - anticollagen immune complexes in synovial fluids of RA-patients.

Collagen-anticollagen immune complexes were demonstrated indirectly in RA synovial fluids by digestion with collagenase and subsequent antibody determination. Elimination of C1q was performed by affinity chromatography using an anti-C1q column. Binding of C1q to collagen-anticollagen complexes was proven by demonstrating that collagenase-caused liberation of collagen antibodies was abolished or distinctly reduced after passage through the anti-C1q column.

Concurrence of condylomata acuminata and bowenoid papulosis: confirmation of the hypothesis that they are related conditions.

Lesions of condyloma acuminatum and of bowenoid papulosis, confirmed histologically, were present concurrently on the penis of a 44-year-old man. All of the lesions regressed spontaneously. This phenomenon suggests that these two conditions, condyloma acuminatum and bowenoid papulosis, are related to one another and that bowenoid papulosis is simply condyloma acuminatum with histologic features of squamous cell carcinoma in situ.

[Influence of the mushroom poison gyromitrin on the lipids of rat liver (author's transl)].

Gyromitrin, the main poison of the false morel Gyromitra esculenta, causes enlargement of the liver in rats. The content of triglycerides and total cholesterol were increased in the liver homogenate and microsomal fraction but not in the mitochondrial fraction. On the other hand the content of phospholipids was found to be decreased.

Human serum inhibitors of collagenase as revealed by preparative isoelectric focusing.

Single step separation of pooled normal human serum by means of preparative isoelectric focusing in the range from pH 3.5--9.8 revealed more heterogeneous inhibition of collagenolytic activity than previously reported.

Clinical and histopathologic correlation of midge bites.

Many species of files viciously bite humans and animals. I had the opportunity to observe such bites by the gnat Leptoconops torrens during a recent epidemic that occurred in an inland desert area of California. The bite may produce an urticarial wheal, but, more characteristically, it induces formation of a hard, indolent, pruritic papule.

Leukocyte locomotion and regulative serum effects in rheumatoid arthritis.

Leukocyte locomotion (LL) of 40 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was found to be unimpaired as compared to LL of 23 control individuals (p Greater Than 0.2). Casein and zymosan activated human sera were used as cytotaxins, and the sera of RA patients proved to be activatable in the same way as control sera in that they produced a similar chemotactic activity (p Greater Than 0.

Concanavalin A-induced suppressor cell activity and in vitro immunoglobulin secretion in rheumatoid arthritis: correlation with clinical and immunological parameters.

Concanavalin A-induced suppressor cell activity was found moderately but significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased in RA patients treated with nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (31 +/- 7% suppression) as compared to patients on remission-inducing drugs, such as gold, penicillamine, or chloroquine (51 +/- 6%) or to healthy individuals (50 +/- 6%). Also, lymphocytes from patients with antibodies to collagen mediated lower suppression (33 +/- 7%) than lymphocytes from patients without evidence for these autoantibodies (61 +/- 11%).

Spontaneous disappearance of molluscum contagiosum. Report of a case.

We report herein a case of molluscum contagiosum that healed spontaneously. The molluscum papules did not involute simultaneously, but became inflamed and disappeared individually over a period of months. Biopsy specimens were taken at various stages of inflammation and regression.

Continuous and discontinuous ionography of the pancreatic juice and the parotid saliva using carrier-membrane disc-electrodes.

The methodology for continuous ionography (monitoring of electrolytic composition) of the pancreatic secretion using a multianalyser is described. The system employs special electrodes which make use of sensing elements constructed of carrier-membrane discs. The procedure has been applied successfully in investigations on animals and is presently being tested in the clinical diagnostic laboratory.

Lymphocyte transformation to denatured type I collagen and B lymphocyte alloantigens in rheumatoid arthritis.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes transformed significantly to denatured type I collagen in 22 of 38 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (58%), 1 of 9 patients with Reiter's disease (P less than 0.05), and 9 of 32 controls (28%) (P less than 0.01).
