Strengthening National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups: Twelve Years of Progress (2012-2023).

Introduction: Well-functioning National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) are valuable contributors to decision-making processes in the complex immunization policy arena. This paper describes the progress made globally on the establishment and strengthening of these key advisory groups and discusses some of their strengths, challenges, and opportunities.

Methods: The data submitted annually by countries to the World Health Organization (WHO) via the WHO/UNICEF Joint Reporting Form (JRF) were analyzed, comparing the NITAG functionality criteria in 2012 and 2023.

Pyopericardium with cardiac tamponade caused by pyogenic liver abscess: a case report.

Introduction: Purulent bacterial pericarditis is a potentially fatal disease with mortality rates reaching 100% if left untreated.

Case Presentation: We present the case of a 33-year-old Caucasian male patient who developed cardiac tamponade, most likely caused by a pyogenic liver abscess communicating with the pericardium. Treatment with antibiotics, extended sepsis therapy, and drainage of the abscess led to a full recovery.

A critical reflection of radiotherapy on osseous free flaps in mandibular segmental resection and immediate reconstruction in locally advanced oral squamous cell carcinoma: A cohort study.

Background And Purpose: With standard radiotherapy protocols after R0 resection of advanced local oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and primary reconstruction of segmental defects, a high radiation dose is applied to healthy tissue in autologous microvascular free flaps. Considering the potential consequences of flap complications and associated surgeries for patients, data is lacking on whether postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) of the flap volume is indicated at all.

Materials And Methods: Patients with segmental mandibular resection and immediate reconstruction with osseous free flaps due to advanced OSCC between 2012 and 2022 were analyzed retrospectively regarding overall (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), local failure-free survival (LFFS), the need for secondary surgeries as well as flap complications and compared between patients with and without PORT in a matched-pair approach with occurrence of flap complications as a primary endpoint.

How do national immunization technical advisory groups assess and use evidence: Findings from the SYSVAC survey.

National immunization technical advisory groups (NITAGs) develop evidence-based vaccination recommendations. Systematic reviews (SRs) are important tools in that process, but conducting them is very resource-intensive. Given the considerable number of immunization-related SRs published and to minimize duplication of effort, a more practical approach for NITAGs is to use existing SRs.

Development of a forensic DNA research grade test material.

Advancements in forensic DNA typing technology and methods have increased sensitivity and, while beneficial, carry the weight of more challenging profile interpretation. In response, the forensic DNA community has often requested more complex reference materials to address commonly encountered measurement and interpretation issues such as complex DNA mixtures, DNA degradation, and PCR inhibition. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released Research Grade Test Material 10235: Forensic DNA Typing Resource Samples to support the forensic DNA community.

Objective: The need for revision surgery after mandibular fractures is an indicator for severe postoperative complications. This study aimed to characterise this patient cohort, describe solutions to deal with complications and evaluate treatment quality as a risk variable for complications.

Protocol to measure and analyze protein interactions in mammalian cells using bioluminescence resonance energy transfer.

Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) allows to quantitate protein interactions in intact cells. Here, we present a protocol for measuring BRET due to transient interactions of oncogenic K-RasG12V in plasma membrane nanoclusters of HEK293-EBNA cells. We describe steps for seeding, transfecting, and replating cells.

Methyl ketone (MK)-ascarosides represent essential components of several pheromones in Caenorhabditis elegans, including the dauer pheromone, which triggers the stress-resistant dauer larval stage, and the male-attracting sex pheromone. Here, we identify an acyl-CoA thioesterase, ACOT-15, that is required for the biosynthesis of MK-ascarosides. We propose a model in which ACOT-15 hydrolyzes the β-keto acyl-CoA side chain of an ascaroside intermediate during β-oxidation, leading to decarboxylation and formation of the MK.

Prompt diagnosis and management of orbital entrapment fractures in the pediatric patient have been advocated. This retrospective study analyzed a cohort of orbital entrapment fractures in pediatric patients with regard to diagnostic pitfalls, treatment and outcomes in a Level I trauma center in Germany. Based on medical records and radiological imaging, patients under the age of 18 years who presented with orbital fractures during 2009-2021 were analyzed.

Biomechanical evaluation of CAD/CAM magnesium miniplates as a fixation strategy for the treatment of segmental mandibular reconstruction with a fibula free flap.

Titanium patient-specific (CAD/CAM) plates are frequently used in mandibular reconstruction. However, titanium is a very stiff, non-degradable material which also induces artifacts in the imaging. Although magnesium has been proposed as a potential material alternative, the biomechanical conditions in the reconstructed mandible under magnesium CAD/CAM plate fixation are unknown.

Quantifying bone healing after mandibular displacement in orthognathic surgery.

Impaired bony healing following bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) is a major unmet medical need for affected patients, and rare occurrences can hinder the identification of underlying risk factors. We hypothesised that osseous union following BSSO can be quantified using volumetric analysis, and we aimed to identify the risk factors for impaired bone healing. The percentage change in bony volume was measured in orthognathic patients following BSSO using two consecutive postoperative cone-beam computed tomography scans.

US Population Data for 94 Identity-Informative SNP Loci.

The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) analyzed a set of 1036 samples representing four major US population groups (African American, Asian American, Caucasian, and Hispanic) with 94 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) used for individual identification (iiSNPs). The compact size of iiSNP amplicons compared to short tandem repeat (STR) markers increases the likelihood of successful amplification with degraded DNA samples. Allele frequencies and relevant forensic statistics were calculated for each population group as well as the aggregate population sample.
