In-office transvaginal hydrolaparoscopy: a step-by-step, intraoperative pain evaluation.

Purpose: Transvaginal hydrolaparoscopy (THL) is a mini-invasive technique, which allows exploration of the posterior pelvis. THL can be carried out as an office procedure and may replace hysterosalpingography and laparoscopy for the diagnosis of infertility. The aim of this study was to assess pain level during each step of THL.

Prenatal screening and counseling for genetic disorders.

Introduction: The carriers of the same autosomal recessive disorder are usually unaware of onset of the genetic diseases in the children even if screenings are available for many of these disorders. In this paper, we report the experience of the Prenatal Diagnosis Center of AOU Federico II and we discuss the role of the screening for beta-thalassemia (BT), cystic fibrosis (CF) and for other rare genetic disorders.

Materials And Methods: We analyzed retrospectively the indication for Prenatal Diagnosis (PD) of all the couples referred to our center from January 1993 to May 2013.

Anesthetic management of a parturient with spinal muscular atrophy type II.

In the past, pregnancy was contraindicated in patients with spinal muscular atrophy. Recently, more cases are occurring because of improvement in survival and functional status. The goals for anesthetic management of these patients include satisfactory anesthesia during surgery and excellent postoperative analgesia with minimal compromise of respiratory function.

Clinical case of seroconversion for syphilis following a needlestick injury: why not take a prophylaxis?

A 47-year-old woman was pricked accidentally with a needle previously used for a neurosyphilitic man. At day 0 she had no positive laboratory results for the infection, while the source, at day 1, had TPHA positive, but no post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) against syphilis was prescribed. The subject missed the day 30 follow-up, and underwent our visit at day 90, when she showed no clinical signs, but she seroconverted (VDRL = positive 1/2; TPHA = positive 1/320; FTA-Abs IgG and IgM = present).
