The cardiac defense response to aversive auditory stimulation is characterized by two acceleration/deceleration heart rate components. The first component is ascribed to attentional processes that facilitate detection and processing of potential threat, and the second one to protective actions. This study investigated attentional modulation of the cardiac defense response and the role of autonomic cardiac control therein.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: This study investigated the impact of transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS) on pain perception, baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and blood pressure (BP)-related hypoalgesia.
Method: Fifty-eight healthy participants were randomized to receive 1) bi-hemispheric tDCS over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) at 2 mA for 20 min, or 2) non-stimulation (Sham). Pain measures (threshold, tolerance, intensity and unpleasantness), emotional state (anxiety and mood), continuous BP, and electrocardiogram (ECG) data were recorded before, during, and after stimulation.
Purpose: Alterations of autonomic cardiovascular control are implicated in the origin of chronic low blood pressure (BP) (hypotension), but comprehensive analysis of baroreflex function is still lacking. This study explored baroreflex function in its cardiac, vascular and myocardial branches METHODS: Continuous BP was recorded at rest and during a mental arithmetic task in 40 hypotensive and 40 normotensive participants. Assessed cardiovascular variables included stroke volume (SV) (calculated by the Modelflow method), heart rate (HR), cardiac output (CO), total peripheral resistance (TPR) and heart rate variability (HRV).

This paper describes follow-up assessments of a previously published study investigating changes in life satisfaction, stress and worry related to childbirth in couples undergoing IVF and those with natural pregnancy. Questionnaire data were obtained in 75 IVF couples and 70 couples with natural pregnancy before pregnancy, and at 6 and 12 months postpartum; follow-up data were recorded 18 and 24 months postpartum.

This study investigated the role of comorbid depression in autonomic cardiovascular dysregulations in fibromyalgia.
Methods: Cardiovascular recordings were obtained in 53 participants with fibromyalgia who also had depression ( n = 27), in participants with fibromyalgia without depression ( n = 26), and in 29 healthy controls, at rest and during a cold pressor test and an arithmetic task.
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic pain condition accompanied by affective symptoms and cognitive impairments. This study investigated central nervous correlates of attentional and emotional processing in FMS. Therefore, event-related potentials were recorded in 26 FMS patients and 26 healthy controls during a dot probe task, which required participants to decide which side of the screen an asterisk was displayed on; the asterisk was immediately preceded by a facial expression (anger, pain, happiness, neutral) on the left or right side.

Systolic blood pressure (SBP), interbeat interval (IBI), stroke volume (SV), pre-ejection period (PEP), and total peripheral resistance (TPR) were continuously recorded in 40 fibromyalgia patients and 30 healthy individuals during a cold pressor test and a mental arithmetic task. This study investigated the relationships of HRQoL with clinical parameters of FMS (pain, insomnia and fatigue) and affective variables (depression and anxiety).
Methods: Women with FMS (n=145) and healthy women (n=94) completed the Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) to evaluate HRQoL, and self-report questionnaires pertaining to clinical pain, symptoms of anxiety and depression, fatigue and insomnia.
