This history page in the series "Leaders in MSK Radiology" is dedicated to the achievements of Swiss radiologist Hans Rudolf Schinz. He is considered the father of Swiss academic radiology but was also influential internationally. Schinz expanded radiologic science into the fields of epidemiology and the natural sciences.

Impact of ovarian vein embolization in recurrent varicose veins of the lower extremity.

The treatment success of catheter-based ovarian vein embolization due to peripheral varicose veins and ovarian vein reflux (OVR) should be investigated in this clinical investagtion. For this study, 95 female patients were identified over a 5-year period (beginning of 2006 to end of 2011) after catheter-based coil (+/- chemical) embolization of the ovarian vein due to peripheral primary or recurrent varicose veins and proven reflux in the ovarian vein. Treatment success was retrospectively assessed in 2014 by means of a structured telephone interview (n=60), clinical examination (n=56), duplex ultrasound (n=56) and magnetic resonance imaging (n=51) in patients who were willing to participate in the study.

Anterior chest wall inflammation by whole-body magnetic resonance imaging in patients with spondyloarthritis: lack of association between clinical and imaging findings in a cross-sectional study.

Introduction: Inflammatory involvement of the anterior chest wall (ACW) affects the quality of life of patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA), although involvement of the ACW is often neglected on clinical and imaging evaluation. Whole-body (WB) MRI is an imaging method used to assess the ACW in addition to the sacroiliac joints and spine without inconvenience for patients. Our goals in this study were to describe the distribution of ACW inflammation by WB MRI in both early and established SpA and associations between clinical and imaging findings indicative of inflammation.

Segmental arterial mediolysis: CTA findings at presentation and follow-up.

Objective: Segmental arterial mediolysis is a rare noninflammatory vascular disease of the abdominal splanchnic arteries. The purpose of our study was to retrospectively describe the CT angiography (CTA) findings of this disease and the evolution of those findings over time in five patients.

Conclusion: Comparison of CTA and digital subtraction angiography suggests that CTA is useful to diagnose symptomatic segmental arterial mediolysis.

Is impingement the cause of jumper's knee? Dynamic and static magnetic resonance imaging of patellar tendinitis in an open-configuration system.

Background: Chronic overload is considered the main cause of patellar tendinitis, but it has been postulated that impingement of the inferior patellar pole against the patellar tendon during knee flexion could be responsible.

Hypothesis: The role of the patellar pole in patellar tendinitis can be determined by dynamic magnetic resonance imaging.

Study Design: Case-control study.
