Background: Clinical studies have long observed that neurodegenerative disorders display a range of symptoms and pathological features and, in some cases, overlap, suggesting that these diseases exist on a spectrum. Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB), a synucleinopathy, is a prominent example, where symptomatic similarities with tauopathy, Alzheimer's disease, are observed. Although tau pathology has been observed in DLB, the interplay between tau and α-synuclein is poorly understood at a molecular level.

In this study, we present the synthesis and analysis of a novel, air-stable, and solvent-resistant phosphaalkene switch. Using this symmetric switch, we have demonstrated degenerate photoisomerization experimentally for the first time. With a combination of photochemical-exchange NMR spectroscopy, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, and quantum chemical calculations, we elucidate the isomerization mechanism of this symmetric phosphaalkene, comparing it to two other known molecules belonging to this class.

This paper is a study of the decisions that researchers take during the execution of a research plan: their researcher discretion. Flexible research methods are generally seen as undesirable, and many methodologists urge to eliminate these so-called 'researcher degrees of freedom' from the research practice. However, what this looks like in practice is unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Advance care planning (ACP) is important for empowering patients with chronic diseases to express their care preferences, but it's not consistently implemented in general practice.
  • A study involving Dutch GP residents used virtual simulation to explore their experiences with ACP conversations, revealing that while the simulation lacked realism, it helped residents understand which topics to discuss.
  • The findings suggest that virtual simulations, alongside critical reflection and practice with real patients, are essential for enhancing GP residents' skills in conducting ACP conversations.

Objectives: In palliative care, it is important for family caregivers to spend time with and care for the patient, and to receive (in)formal support. These elements were compromised during the Covid-19-pandemic. This study investigates what family caregivers of non-Covid-19-patients in the palliative phase shared online during the first wave of the pandemic, and what their communicative intentions were with posting online.

Airborne pollutants like particulate matter and volatile organic compounds can negatively impact microbial, plant, and animal life as well as human health. Traditional environmental monitoring, while crucial, often relies on expensive equipment at limited locations, leading to gaps in geographical coverage. To obtain a low-cost, easily deployed environmental monitoring grid, the use of European honey bees (Apis mellifera) as biomonitor can offer a promising alternative.

Background: Persons with dementia frequently experience mealtime behavioral problems that can result in reduced or lack of intake of food or fluids. Multiple underlying causes and expressions of mealtime behavioral problems complicate its interpretation and intervention, because problems originating from cognitive and functional decline and behavioral changes may interact. Healthcare professionals and family caregivers may encounter a variety of practical and moral dilemmas in dealing with these problems.

Adverse pregnancy outcomes are associated with poor short- and long-term cardiovascular health. However, patients and their health care providers may not have knowledge of this risk or of the healthful practices that can reduce this risk. Childbirth care can be a pivotal time in the patient-clinician relationship to build awareness and spur prevention planning.

Article Synopsis
  • Advance care planning (ACP) has shifted towards focusing on broad conversations about values and preferences regarding future medical treatment, especially in the context of dementia care.
  • An explorative study surveyed 87 international experts and analyzed how they defined ACP, with nearly half providing definitions from a patient perspective, indicating a shared emphasis on individualized care.
  • Key themes identified in definitions included 'Choosing between options', 'Care and treatment', and 'Having conversations', suggesting that expert consensus favors person-centered approaches rather than concentrating solely on end-of-life issues or documentation.

Environmental monitoring is crucial for assessing the overall state of the ecosystems in terms of contaminant impact and chemical landscape. The use of honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies considerably eases the sampling activities, as honey bees are exposed to a wide range of substances that are transported and accumulated within the beehives. In this work, combining low-resolution and high-resolution mass spectrometry, the APIStrip passive sampler has been employed to evaluate the presence of pesticide residues and the overall characterization of beehive environments.
