Neuroimaging correlates of negative priming.

Many theoretical accounts of selective attention and memory retrieval include reference to active inhibitory processes, such as those argued to underlie the negative priming effect. fMRI was used in order to investigate the areas of cortical activation associated with Stroop interference, Stroop facilitation and Stroop negative priming tasks. The most significant activation within the negative priming task was within the inferior parietal lobule, left temporal lobe and frontal lobes.

Worm burden and host responsiveness in Wuchereria bancrofti infection: use of antigen detection to refine earlier assessments from the South Pacific.

A population from the Wuchereria bancrofti-endemic island of Mauke was reevaluated retrospectively by use of the Og4C3 circulating antigen (CAg) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to assess active infection in relation to host responses by age and gender. Use of microfilaremia (Mf) alone misclassified approximately 50% of infected people, although CAg and Mf levels were positively correlated. Levels of CAg peaked between those aged 31-60 years; men aged > 60 years had a significantly higher CAg prevalence (> 90%) than women.

Two routes to [11C-carbonyl]organo-isocyanates utilizing [11C]phosgene ([11C]organo-isocyanates from [11C]phosgene).

Two generic radiosynthetic routes for the preparation of [11C-carbonyl]isocyanates have been developed. Reaction of N-organo-sulfinylamines; RNSO, (R = Me, Et, allyl, cyclohexyl and phenyl) with [11C]phosgene gave the corresponding [11C-carbonyl]isocyanates in good radiochemical yield (53-68%) from [11C]phosgene (decay corrected) in ca 16 min from EOB. Alternatively, the reaction of [11C]phosgene with N,N'-organo-ureas; (RNH)(2)CO, (R = Me, Et, Pr and phenyl) also gave the corresponding [11C-carbonyl]isocyanates in moderate radiochemical yield (9-37%) from [11C]phosgene (decay corrected) in ca 16 min from EOB.

Chromosomal radiosensitivity in G2-phase lymphocytes identifies breast cancer patients with distinctive tumour characteristics.

A substantial proportion of women with breast cancer exhibit an abnormally high radiosensitivity as measured by the frequency of chromatid breaks induced in G2-phase, PHA stimulated lymphocytes. Chromatid break frequencies were compared for a cohort of previously untreated sporadic breast cancer patients and hospital outpatient controls. Evolution of immunologic responsiveness of persons living in an area of endemic bancroftian filariasis: a 17-year follow-up.

On an island in which bancroftian filariasis is endemic, 29 microfilaremic and 16 "endemic normal" (EN) subjects initially studied in 1974-1975 were reevaluated 17 years later. Eleven persons remained microfilaremic, whereas 18 had cleared both microfilaremia and antigenemia. Despite decreased infection on the island, antibody levels remained relatively constant for the subjects with persistent microfilaremia (Mf(+/+)), in contrast to sharp decreases for both EN subjects and subjects with cleared microfilaremia (Mf(+/-)).

Cancer risk perceptions and distress among women attending a familial ovarian cancer clinic.

Of 230 women referred to a familial ovarian cancer clinic, 196 (85%) completed a questionnaire before they attended. The data collected included pre-counselling risk perceptions and an assessment of distress. Respondents were more likely to underestimate (44%) than overestimate (19%) their risk.

Surgical arthrodesis of distal tarsal joints in 17 horses clinically affected with osteoarthritis.

Objective: To evaluate the outcome of 17 horses that underwent surgical arthrodesis of the tarsometatarsal and distal intertarsal joints for treatment of lameness due to osteoarthritis.

Design: Retrospective clinical study using client-owned animals.

Procedure: Horses with hindlimb lameness were diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the distal tarsal joints following relief of lameness after intra-articular anaesthesia or intra-articular corticosteroid injection.

Influence of UV-B irradiation on the carotenoid content of Vitis vinifera tissues.

The carotenoid content was examined in leaf and berry tissues of grapevines (cv. Cabernet Sauvignon) grown either under ambient conditions or under a polyester film to reduce UV light by 98%. Total carotenoids in leaves were less in vines grown under the UV screen.

A polymorphic tetranucleotide repeat in the CYP19 gene and male breast cancer.

The CYP19 gene codes for the aromatase enzyme that is involved in the synthesis of oestrogens. This case-control study examines the relationship between a tetranucleotide repeat sequence in the CYP19 gene and the development of male breast cancer. No significant differences were found between male breast cancer cases and controls.

A rapid-format antibody card test for diagnosis of onchocerciasis.

Improved methods are needed for field diagnosis of onchocerciasis, to support efforts aimed at elimination of the disease. A rapid-format card test was evaluated that detects IgG4 antibodies to recombinant Onchocerca volvulus antigen Ov16 with serum samples from patients with onchocerciasis and with various types of control serum samples. The sensitivity of the test with serum samples from 106 microfilariae-positive subjects was 90.

Improving the predictability of performance by prerace detection of dorsal metacarpal disease in thoroughbred racehorses.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of dorsal metacarpal disease in 2-year-old Thoroughbred horses by prerace inspection and to evaluate the effectiveness of a dorsal metacarpal disease detection program on the predictability of race performance (finishing in the order predicted by punters) and the distance between the first- and last-placed horse in a field.

Design: A retrospective study using client-owned horses.

Methods: A program of prerace detection of dorsal metacarpal disease using digital palpation of the dorsal aspect of the third metacarpal bone of both forelimbs of 2-year-old Thoroughbreds racing at Ascot racecourse was instituted by the Western Australian Turf Club in December 1995.

The pathology of familial breast cancer: histological features of cancers in families not attributable to mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2.

Breast cancers arising in carriers of mutations in the breast cancer susceptibility genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, differ histologically from each other and from breast cancers unselected for a family history. However, a substantial proportion of families with multiple cases of breast cancer is not attributable to these two genes (non-BRCA1/2 families). We have now characterized the pathology of 82 breast cancers from non-BRCA1/2 families.

Ulceration and stricture of the right dorsal colon after phenylbutazone administration in four horses.

Four cases of ulceration and stricture of the right dorsal colon were encountered. Ulceration of the right dorsal colon is generally associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) toxicosis but there are few reports of stricture following ulceration. All four horses had recent phenylbutazone use: three had been given doses well in excess of the recommended dose and in one the dose was marginally above those recommended but was combined with administration of other NSAIDs.

Effect of topical rh-TGF-beta 1 on second intention wound healing in horses.

Objective: To investigate the effects on wound healing of transforming growth factor-beta 1 as a topical treatment to full-thickness, excisional wounds of the distal limb of horses.

Design: A randomised block study using four horses, each with wounds assigned to four treatment groups.

Animals: Four adult Standardbred geldings.

Evidence of a founder BRCA1 mutation in Scotland.

BRCA1 mutations have been identified in breast and ovarian cancer families from diverse ethnic backgrounds. We studied 17 different families with the BRCA1 2800delAA mutation; seven were ascertained in Scotland (Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews), five in Canada (Toronto, Victoria) and five in the United States (Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle). Overall there was a clear preponderance of Scottish ancestry.

Molecular pathology of breast cancer and its impact on clinical practice.

Molecular studies in breast cancer are in their infancy but infants mature very quickly nowadays. The impact of new technologies on medical practice is already becoming evident and will transform the entire scene within a generation. The most rapidly moving part of the field at present is familial breast cancer.

Guidelines for follow-up of women at high risk for inherited breast cancer: consensus statement from the Biomed 2 Demonstration Programme on Inherited Breast Cancer.

Protocols for activity aiming at early diagnosis and treatment of inherited breast or breast-ovarian cancer have been reported. Available reports on outcome of such programmes are considered here. It is concluded that the ongoing activities should continue with minor modifications.

Efficacy of early diagnosis and treatment in women with a family history of breast cancer. European Familial Breast Cancer Collaborative Group.

Background: Surveillance programmes for women at increased genetic risk of breast cancer are being established worldwide but little is known of their efficacy in early detection of cancers and hence reduction in mortality.

Methods: Data were contributed from seven centres participating in the EU Demonstration Programme on Clinical Services for Familial Breast Cancer. All breast tumours (n = 161) detected prospectively, from the time of enrolment of women in a screening programme, were recorded.
