Electrically detected magnetic resonance using radio-frequency reflectometry.

The authors demonstrate readout of electrically detected magnetic resonance at radio frequencies by means of a LCR tank circuit. Applied to a silicon field-effect transistor at millikelvin temperatures, this method shows a 25-fold increased signal-to-noise ratio of the conduction band electron spin resonance and a higher operational bandwidth of >300 kHz compared to the kilohertz bandwidth of conventional readout techniques. This increase in temporal resolution provides a method for future direct observations of spin dynamics in the electrical device characteristics.

Radio-frequency reflectometry on large gated two-dimensional systems.

We have embedded an AlGaAs/GaAs based, gated two-dimensional (2D) hole system (2DHS) into an impedance transformer LC circuit and show that by using radio-frequency reflectometry it is possible to perform sensitive, large bandwidth, electrical resistance measurements of 2D systems at millikelvin temperatures. We construct a simple lumped element model where the gated 2DHS is described as a resistive transmission line. The model gives a qualitative understanding of the experimental results.

Bias spectroscopy and simultaneous single-electron transistor charge state detection of Si:P double dots.

We report a detailed study of low-temperature (mK) transport properties of a silicon double-dot system fabricated by phosphorous ion implantation. The device under study consists of two phosphorous nanoscale islands doped to above the metal-insulator transition, separated from each other and the source and drain reservoirs by nominally undoped (intrinsic) silicon tunnel barriers. Metallic control gates, together with an Al-AlO(x) single-electron transistor (SET), were positioned on the substrate surface, capacitively coupled to the buried dots.

Occupational concerns of women who are homeless and have children: an occupational justice critique.

SUMMARY The purpose of this exploratory study was to describe the occupational goals and concerns of women who are homeless with children. Twenty-seven women with children living in homeless shelters completed interviews using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). Occupational issues and concerns were identified for each participant, and then they were pooled.

Ventricular septal hamartoma mimicking hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a 41-year-old woman presenting with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.

We report an unusual case of cardiac hamartoma involving the ventricular septum. The patient presented with palpitations and exertional chest pain. Echocardiography indicated a large homogeneous mass occupying the superior two-thirds of the ventricular septum.

Progress in silicon-based quantum computing.

We review progress at the Australian Centre for Quantum Computer Technology towards the fabrication and demonstration of spin qubits and charge qubits based on phosphorus donor atoms embedded in intrinsic silicon. Fabrication is being pursued via two complementary pathways: a 'top-down' approach for near-term production of few-qubit demonstration devices and a 'bottom-up' approach for large-scale qubit arrays with sub-nanometre precision. The 'top-down' approach employs a low-energy (keV) ion beam to implant the phosphorus atoms.

The Cuban elderly and their service use.

Empirical studies on use of services by the elderly are absent from the research literature. Existing studies are concerned primarily with health service use rather than social service use by special population groups. Moreover, most aging Hispanic utilization research has been descriptive instead of attempting to develop and test structural models that explain service use behavior.

Home health care utilization: a causal model.

The present study develops and tests a causal model of home health care utilization by the Lucas County elderly. Path analysis was employed to evaluate the model on an area probability sample of 400 Ohio elderly. The findings indicate that the predictors of home health care are more diverse than was expected with the need factor (need for care, use of health appliances, limits to daily activities), enabling factor (knowledge of resources) and predisposing (age) factors all contributing to the use process.

Home health care: the elderly's perception.

Increasing attention has been given to the identification and description of variables associated with health and social services needed, sought and used by the elderly. Little is known, however, about the home health care needs of the elderly. Moreover, since the inception of the diagnostic related group concept, no one has determined the elderly's perception of home health care.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia in lambs: hemodynamic and ventilatory changes with breathing.

Left diaphragmatic hernias were produced surgically in ten control lambs at term, and in 19 lambs in 127-144 days' gestation. The hemodynamic and ventilatory changes that occur following delivery and attempted spontaneous breathing were noted. The herniated viscera effectively occluded the diaphragmatic defect, and all lambs were capable of developing negative intrathoracic pressure.
