Statistical procedures were utilized to evaluate the concentration dependence of labeling by ferritin-conjugated lectins on four different rat cells: hepatocytes, normal thymocytes, Friend virus-induced rat tumor cells and feline sarcoma virus-induced rat sarcoma cells. Labeling by ferritin conjugates of concanavalin A, wheat germ agglutinin and Ricinus communis agglutinins I and II was quantitated by counting the number of ferritin granules on 600 Angstrom membrane segments. Relationships between the arithmetic means and variances for sample populations from each cell and ferritin-lectin combination were used to define four types of topographical distributions: uniform/ordered, uniform/random, random and clustered.

Bipolar ligation of the splenic artery and excision of the pseudoaneurysm was curative. The location of the splenic artery makes it especially vulnerable to aneurysmal formation in patients with pancreatitis.

If unsuccessful emergency surgery is necessary. The flexible colonoscope offers an additional therapeutic modality to effectuate preoperative reduction of the twisted sigmoid colon if attempts with conventional methods fail.

It was anticipated that an antireflux operation might interfere with esophageal speech. A Nissen fundoplication resulted in complete resolution of signs and symptoms of reflux esophagitis without compromising esophageal speech.

The pattern of incorporation of radioactivity from 14C-fructose and 14C-mannose into intermediates of hexose metabolism was indistinguishable from that reported elsewhere for the initial post-absorptive metabolism of 14C-glucose under comparable conditions; these hexoses were phosphorylated rapidly following their absorption, and much of the radioactivity absorbed as mannose or fructose was recovered in the nonreducing disaccharide trehalose [alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 leads to 1)-alpha-D-glucopyranoside].

The Con A binding glycoproteins isolated in this manner displayed a significantly different profile on sodium dodecyl sulfate--polyacrylamide gels than did the Triton-soluble surface components, which were not retarded by the Con-A-Sepharose column. [125I]-Con A overlays of the pooled column fractions displayed on sodium dodecyl sulfate--polyacrylamide gel electro-phoresis (SDS-PAGE) demonstrated that there were virtually no Con A receptors associated with the unretarded peak released by the Con A-Sepharose column, whereas the material which was bound and specifically eluted from the Con A-Sepharose column with the sugar hapten alpha-methyl-D-mannopyranoside contained at least 15 prominent bands which bound [125I]-Con A.

Two brothers described in this report were found to have normal basal serum thyrocalcitonin levels when examined after another family member died from metastatic medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. Pentagastrin, a synthetic analog of gastrin, was subsequently administered to these two high-risk relatives and found to stimulate the release of thyrocalcitonin to abnormally high levels.

The ulcer may have been etiological in precipitating the intussusception, or a consequence of mucosal sloughing in the hemorrhagic intussusception. Early diagnosis and immediate surgical therapy resulted in an uneventful recovery.

Kinetic and inhibition studies indicated that glucose and 2-deoxyglucose were absorbed via a single common transport locus. Mannose, N-acetylglucosamine, 3-0-methylglucose, fructose, and galactose (in decreasing order of effectiveness) inhibited the uptake of glucose in a completely competitive manner; their absorptions appeared to be mediated by the glucose transport locus and, to some degree, by one or more additional transport systems.

In addition fresh human erythrocytes were analyzed after incubation for filterability changes after exogenous lysosomal enzymes were added to the suspension medium. The results showed statistically significant elevations of the filterability index (decrease in filterability of the red cells) after 10 minutes on cardiopulmonary bypass as well as postoperatively.
