Eating in preschool children with cystic fibrosis and healthy peers: behavioral analysis.

Study Objective: To investigate calorie intake, behavioral eating styles, and parent perception of eating behavior of preschool children with cystic fibrosis (CF) compared with healthy peers.

Design: A two group comparison study.

Setting: A clinical sample of 32 preschool children with CF (aged 2 to 5 years) and a community sample of 29 healthy peers matched for age and socioeconomic status.

Lindane blocks GABAA-mediated inhibition and modulates pyramidal cell excitability in the rat hippocampal slice.

An in vitro paired-pulse orthodromic stimulation technique was used to examine the effects of lindane on excitatory afferent terminals, CA1 pyramidal cells and recurrent collateral evoked inhibition in the rat hippocampal slice. This was done to establish simultaneous effects on a simple neural network and to develop procedures for more detailed analyses of the effects of lindane. Hippocampal slices 400 microns thick were perfused with oxygenated artificial cerebrospinal fluid.

Antibodies to St. Louis encephalitis virus in armadillos from southern Florida.

From January 1990 through March 1991, 189 armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) were collected from Brevard and Glades Counties in southern Florida (USA). The sera were analyzed for hemagglutination-inhibition (HAI) antibodies against St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) and eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) viruses.

Modifying problematic mealtime interactions of children with cystic fibrosis and their parents via behavioral parent training.

Implemented behavioral parent training targeting maladaptive mealtime behavior with two children with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their parents. Treatment was implemented in multiple baseline fashion across the two families. Primary dependent measure was coding of parent and child behaviors from videotaped dinners.

Comparison of chickens and pheasants as sentinels for eastern equine encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis viruses in Florida.

Pheasants and chickens were compared as sentinels for monitoring the transmission of arboviruses of public health significance in Florida during 1991-93. Results suggest that pheasants are better sentinels for eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus. They detected virus transmission 3-6 weeks earlier in epizootic years, 2-4 times more frequently during the season, and twice as many birds within a flock seroconverted during a given week.

Accumulation of p53 is associated with tumour progression in cutaneous lesions of renal allograft recipients.

Renal allograft recipients suffer from a markedly increased susceptibility to premalignant and malignant cutaneous lesions. Although various aetiological factors have been implicated, little is known of the associated genetic events. In this study we initially employed immunocytochemical techniques to investigate the prevalence and localisation of accumulated p53 in over 200 cutaneous biopsies (including 56 squamous cell carcinomas) from renal allograft recipients and immunocompetent controls.

Ileal bladder augmentation combined with ileal ureter replacement in advanced urogenital tuberculosis.

We report a case of active tuberculosis associated with a right nonfunctioning kidney and nearly total loss of bladder capacity. Percutaneous nephrostomy and right nephroureterectomy were performed while the patient was undergoing triple drug therapy. Definitive surgical treatment consisted of ileal bladder augmentation and ileal ureter replacement.

Prevalence of human papillomavirus DNA in cutaneous neoplasms from renal allograft recipients supports a possible viral role in tumour promotion.

It is well established that renal allograft recipients (RARs) have an increased incidence of viral warts and premalignant and malignant cutaneous lesions, and the risk of their development increases in proportion to duration of graft survival. It has been postulated that, in addition to the effects of prolonged immunosuppression and previous sun exposure, human papillomaviruses (HPV) may also contribute to the carcinogenic process. In this study, the prevalence of HPV DNA was examined in a range of premalignant and malignant cutaneous tumours from 50 immunosuppressed patients (47 renal allograft recipients plus three cardiac allograft recipients) and 56 immunocompetent patients using Southern hybridisation as a low-stringency screening method and type-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays for eight HPV types.

Subject instructions and methods of target presentation in accommodation research.

Purpose: The authors investigated the potential of subject instructions to alter the static accommodative stimulus-response function. They also investigated whether the reduced cue environment of the Badal optical system leads to accommodative responses different from those that occur for targets presented in real space.

Methods: Static accommodative responses with three focusing instructions were compared to baselines obtained with minimal instruction to stabilize gaze.

Efficiency of searchpatterns.

Search theory deals with the efficiency of covering searchpatterns; a classical example is systematic row search with sweep spacing dependent upon window size. Human visual search is a function of contrast and size of the targets and of effective visual lobe size, this latter influenced by clutter and foveal load. Human searchpatterns often are optimal covers.

Vascular addressins are induced on islet vessels during insulitis in nonobese diabetic mice and are involved in lymphoid cell binding to islet endothelium.

In the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse, lymphocytic and monocytic infiltration of the pancreatic islets leads to beta cell destruction. To investigate the mechanisms by which lymphocytes enter the NOD pancreas, pancreata were immunostained using monoclonal antibodies to a variety of adhesion molecules known to be involved in lymphocyte binding to vascular endothelium, an initial step in the migration of lymphocytes from blood into organized lymphoid and inflamed tissues. These adhesion molecules include: lymphocyte homing receptors involved in tissue-selective binding of lymphocytes to peripheral lymph node (L-selectin) or mucosal lymphoid tissue (LPAM-1, alpha 4 beta 7-integrin) high-endothelial venules (HEV); and HEV ligands peripheral vascular addressin (PNAd) and mucosal vascular addressin (MAdCAM-1).

Computer analysis of eye movements.

An interactive program package for the acquisition, analysis and plotting of human eye movements is introduced. It is shown that the programs described in this paper can be used by scientists in a wide range of disciplines in spite of their different data analysis requirements. An example dealing with smooth pursuit tracking is given.

Characterization of the anticonvulsant properties of F-721.

The anticonvulsant properties of F-721 (3-diethylamino-2,2-dimethylpropyl-5-[p-trifluoromethylphenyl]-2-f uroate hydrochloride) were investigated in a battery of in vivo and in vitro anticonvulsant model systems. The pupil can be excited to sustained oscillations under high gain feedback conditions. The period of these oscillations (cycle time) is reduced by increased average light level by an amount commensurate with reductions in phase lag reported in the companion paper (Myers et al. 1991b).

Pupillary responses to sinusoidal light stimuli were measured over a range of light levels and frequencies. The phase lag and equivalent time delay of these responses were reduced in an approximately log-linear fashion with increasing mean light level (slope = -60 ms/log unit). The magnitude of this level dependence is reduced at higher frequencies, and at higher light levels.

Model control of image processing: pupillometry.

Smart instruments require on-line computers, special purpose hardware, or both. A pupillometer is described that relies only on a general purpose microcomputer with a frame grabber to process infrared video camera pictures of the human eye. An essential feature of the instrument is that a top-down model controls the image processing algorithms.

[Organ saving therapy of bilateral testicular tumor].

Of 368 patients with unilateral testicular cancer, 12 (3.3%) suffered from a second malignant germ cell tumor; five tumors occurred synchronously, seven were treated by bilateral orchiectomy, five were treated by unilateral organ sparing surgery with enucleation of the germ cell tumor in a pilot study. Enucleation was performed for four seminomas and one embryonal carcinoma; an associated carcinoma was found in situ in three cases.

Venous pressure in idiopathic varicocele.

In 27 patients with clinically identified idiopathic left varicocele, a retrograde venography and a combined pressure measurement in the vena cava, vena renalis and vena spermatica was performed. During Valsalva maneuver the pressure values increased. We could not confirm increased pressure values in the left renal vein dependent on the patient's position.

Increasing calorie consumption in children with cystic fibrosis: replication with 2-year follow-up.

Three mildly malnourished children with cystic fibrosis and their parents participated in a behavioral group-treatment program that focused on promoting and maintaining increased calorie consumption. Treatment included nutritional education, gradually increasing calorie goals, contingency management, and relaxation training, and was evaluated in a multiple baseline design across four meals. Children's calorie intake increased across meals, and total calorie intake was 32% to 60% above baseline at posttreatment.

Accommodation on downward gaze.

A study was conducted with the purpose of examining the possible effects of vertical and horizontal eye movements upon accommodation. A special Badal stimulator was made which was vertically rotatable around the center of an eye. The stimulator was attached to the Three-Dimensional Optometer III (TDOIII), which could measure accommodation, eye movement, and pupil diameter simultaneously.

[The synchronous appearance of multiple testicular epidermoid cysts and of a malignant mixed germinal tumor in the contralateral testis].

We describe the simultaneous appearance of multiple epidermoid cysts in the right and an adult teratoma containing embryonal carcinoma and choriocarcinoma in the left testis. No similar case has previously been described. Epidermoid cysts of the testis are rare, accounting for about 1% of all testicular tumors.

Feedforward stabilization in a bimanual unloading task.

When one hand removes a load from the other hand, feedforward motor commands stabilize the position of the unloaded hand. We studied the stabilization of the postural hand using a novel apparatus that allowed unloading at different rates, and unexpected uncoupling of the unloading force from the postural hand. Feedforward stabilization of hand position was observed in all subjects.

Treatment of non-small cell lung cancer with external beam radiotherapy and high dose rate brachytherapy.

Between August 1985 and September 1989, 62 patients with medically inoperable or surgically unresectable, non-small cell lung cancer were treated with both external beam radiotherapy and high dose rate bronchial brachytherapy. Treatment consisted of external beam radiotherapy (5000-6000 cGy in 5-6 1/2 weeks) and weekly high dose rate bronchial brachytherapy (three to five fractions, 500 cGy at 1 cm from the source) delivered either concurrently or sequentially. Median survival for all patients was 13 months (m).
