Malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva – successful surgical excision of the primary tumor and reconstruction by conjunctival auto transplantation from the contralateral eye.

Malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva is a rare tumor with incidence of 0.5 cases/year per million population. It may also occur as de novo, as on the basis of preexisting melanocytic lesions (nevus or freckle) or most often from the so-called primary acquired melanosis of the conjuctiva (PAM).

[Two autopsy cases with microchimerism].

Identification of chorionic villi in spiral arterioles and later in maternal circulation is known as maternal microchimerism. Distant consequences of this condition are unclear associated mainly with risk from autoimmune diseases. Our presentation is aiming at introducing the term microchimerism and to propose a connection between this phenomenon and the reasons for the death of the fetus.

[Adenocarcinoma of the pancreas with distant meningeal metastasis].

In our country patients die rapidly from pancreatic cancer and are extremely rarely subjected to autopsy--they either die at home, or complications from primary tumor result in low clinical interest. We had the rare chance to perform an autopsy on a female patient with meningeal spread of pancreatic carcinoma, in which the patient initially developed signs of neurologic disorder without exhibiting any symptoms of pancreatic disease.

[Placental chorangiosis associated with abruption and hypoxia].

Chorangiosis is a rare abnormality of placental capillary proliferation, associated with hypoxia in utero. A 23-year-old primigravida developed placental abruption at 33 weeks' gestation, and an emergency cesarean section was performed. Placental histology revealed chorangiosis.

[Placental parameters and fetal outcome].

Microscopic peliosis of pancreatic islets associated with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Peliosis is a rarely seen histological finding with unexplained fully etiology and pathogenesis. It is presented as cyst-like blood filled cavities. The presence of peliosis in the endocrine part of the pancreas is extremely rarely reported microscopic phenomenon.

[Incidence and structure of pediatric pathology according to autopsy files at the University Hospital "St. George" Plovdiv, Bulgaria during 1985-2001].

The present study is aiming at sharing our problems and experience with pediatric autopsy cases. The incidence of pediatric cases as part of total autopsy activity is estimated. Criteria such as coincidence between pediatricians' and final pathological diagnosis are considered.

[Trophoblast expression of EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) in the preeclampsia placenta].

Unlabelled: Placental pathology in preeclampsia and retarded fetuses is associated with changes of the pattern of expression of EGFR. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor in trophoblast populations of preeclampsia and retarded fetuses in comparison with normal controls. Tissue microarray with paraffin sections containing a general of 90 placental specimens including 30 preeclamptic cases, 30 retarded fetuses and 30 normal pregnancies (controls) were studied immunohistochemically for epidermal growth factor receptor in the syncytiotrophoblast and villous cytotrophoblast.

[Proliferation of villous trophoblast and stroma in normal and pathologic pregnancies (preeclampsia)].

Pregnancies, complicated with preeclampsia, present with intrauterine growth retardation of the fetus and small (in size and weight) placentas. The present study aims at establishing the expression of proliferative nuclear antigen Ki-67 in the villous trophoblast and stroma, and to compare the results between study (preeclamptic cases n = 30) and control (normal n = 30) groups. The number of Ki-67 positive nuclei both in the preeclamptic trophoblast and stroma significantly increases those of the controls.

[Socio-economic characteristics of pregnant women with preeclampsia: a gypsies population survey].

Preeclampsia as a serious syndrome affecting both the mother and the baby is associated with a number of socio-economic, demographic and clinical characteristics. We have filed the distribution of major epidemiological parameters in two gypsy groups, comprising 58 preeclamptic and 118 control cases. Only the classical features of preeclampsia as well as single liveborns were included in our study.
