Synopsis In a preliminary clinical study, two cosmetic preparations were compared, one without an oxygen carrier and therefore without oxygen, the other one containing the oxygen carrier, fully saturated with oxygen. The parameters measured were the moisture content of the skin and the skin profile. Since the oxygen-free product contained the same ingredients, including phospholipids in liposomal form, with the exception of perfluorodecalin - the oxygen carrier, this investigation showed that perfluorodecalin plus molecular oxygen improves the barrier function of the skin.

Synopsis In a cross-over trial two different new syndet bars differing in their content of sodium cocoyl isethionate, disodium lauryl sulfosuccinate and wheat starch as major components were compared in the cleansing of hand skin of 72 healthy volunteers. The preparation designated 'T'containing a higher amount of wheat starch turned out to be less irritant as judged from the parameters itching and erythema (p < 0.05, Wilcoxon's test for matched pairs).

Right ventricular oxygen saturation (SO2) may be an ideal sensor for determining the rate of an implanted pacemaker. In order to prove this hypothesis, the obtained signals were optimally analyzed; determinations of SO2 at rest and during exercise were made in healthy volunteers and in patients with pacemakers; and an algorithm was developed for varying pacing rate as a function of measured SO2. The results suggest that this method may be applicable to the long-term implantee.
