High-density polyethylene (HDPE) has been extensively studied, both as a model for semi-crystalline polymers and because of its own industrial utility. During cold drawing, crystalline regions of HDPE are known to break up and align with the direction of tensile load. Structural changes due to deformation should also manifest at the surface of the polymer, but until now, a detailed molecular understanding of how the surface responds to mechanical deformation has been lacking.

Brief Education Intervention Increases Nutrition Knowledge and Confidence of Coaches of Junior Australian Football Teams.

This study evaluated the impact of a brief (20-min) nutrition education intervention embedded in an existing mandatory coach education course for coaches of junior (8-12 years old) Australian football teams. A total of 284 coaches (68% of 415 coaching course participants) completed a presession questionnaire, and 110 coaches (27% of coaching course participants) completed an identical postsession questionnaire. The responses to the pre- and postsession surveys were matched for 78 coaches.

Urine angiostatin and VCAM-1 surpass conventional metrics in predicting elevated renal pathology activity indices in lupus nephritis.

Aim: The goal of this study is to investigate how urinary angiostatin, vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) and established measures of renal function relate to specific histologic findings in paired kidney biopsy samples from patients with lupus nephritis (LN).

Method: Urine samples were collected from 54 LN patients together with paired kidney biopsy samples and examined for urinary angiostatin and VCAM-1 protein levels. Nonparametric tests were used to examine the association of both urinary biomarkers and established traditional laboratory markers of renal function with nine specific renal histologic features seen in LN, including glomerular leukocyte infiltration, endocapillary proliferation, cellular crescents, fibrinoid necrosis, wire loops, interstitial inflammation, glomerulosclerosis, fibrous crescents, tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis.

In contrast, and reflective of the more chronic nature of progressive neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD), here, we report the consequences of prolonged, cell-autonomous activation of the UPR in dopaminergic neurons.

Pharmacokinetics and selected pharmacodynamics of trazodone following intravenous and oral administration to horses undergoing fitness training.

OBJECTIVE To measure concentrations of trazodone and its major metabolite in plasma and urine after administration to healthy horses and concurrently assess selected physiologic and behavioral effects of the drug. ANIMALS 11 Thoroughbred horses enrolled in a fitness training program. PROCEDURES In a pilot investigation, 4 horses received trazodone IV (n = 2) or orally (2) to select a dose for the full study; 1 horse received a vehicle control treatment IV.

Equine fetuses have substantial circulating pregnenolone concentrations and thus have been postulated to provide significant substrate for placental 5α-reduced pregnane production, but the fetal site of pregnenolone synthesis remains unclear. The current studies investigated steroid concentrations in blood, adrenal glands, gonads and placenta from fetuses (4, 6, 9 and 10 months of gestational age (GA)), as well as tissue steroidogenic enzyme transcript levels. Pregnenolone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) were the most abundant steroids in fetal blood, pregnenolone was consistently higher but decreased progressively with GA.
