The Future Healthy Countdown 2030 consensus statement: core policy actions and measures to achieve improvements in the health and wellbeing of children, young people and future generations.

Introduction: This consensus statement recommends eight high-level trackable policy actions most likely to significantly improve health and wellbeing for children and young people by 2030. These policy actions include an overarching policy action and span seven interconnected domains that need to be adequately resourced for every young person to thrive: Material basics; Valued, loved and safe; Positive sense of identity and culture; Learning and employment pathways; Healthy; Participating; and Environments and sustainable futures.

Main Recommendations: Provide financial support to invest in families with young children and address poverty and material deprivation in the first 2000 days of life.

Simulated GP clinic closure: effects on patient access in the Irish Mid-West.

Introduction: Rural communities can experience more barriers to accessing health care than their urban counterparts, largely due to fewer healthcare staff and services, and geographical isolation. The purpose of this study is to examine the availability of GP practices in rural communities across the Mid-West of Ireland and the potential impact of practice closure on patient access.

Methods: GP clinic locations were identified in Ireland's Mid-West, specifically counties Limerick and Clare.

The construction of canine distal limb models used in teaching sonography identification of vegetal foreign bodies.

Musculoskeletal ultrasonography is a useful tool to identify radiolucent vegetal foreign bodies (VFBs). However, limited ultrasound experience and unfamiliarity with the normal sonographic appearance of anatomical structures can decrease clinician confidence. This study aimed to design a reusable silicone model that can teach VFB identification within the canine distal limb.

Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) is the mitochondrial enzyme converting succinate to fumarate in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle. SDH acts as a tumor suppressor with germline loss-of-function mutations in its encoding genes predisposing to aggressive familial neuroendocrine and renal cancer syndromes. Lack of SDH activity disrupts the TCA cycle, imposes Warburg-like bioenergetic features, and commits cells to rely on pyruvate carboxylation for anabolic needs.

Microbial Influence on the Mobility of +3 Actinides from a Salt-Based Nuclear Waste Repository.

Biologically enhanced transport of radionuclides is one of several processes that can affect the performance of a nuclear waste repository. In this work, several microbial isolates from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) were tested for their influence on the concentration of neodymium, as an analog for +3 actinides, in simple sodium chloride solutions and in anoxic WIPP brines. Batch sorption experiments were carried out over a period of 4-5 weeks.

Irish general practitioner (GP) perspectives on impact of direct access radiology on patient care in the community: results from a mixed-methods study.

Background: Since winter 2020/21, general practitioners (GPs) in the Republic of Ireland (RoI) have been granted access to diagnostic imaging studies on a new publicly funded pathway, expediting access to services previously obtained via hospital-based doctors.

Aims: Outline GP perspectives on imaging studies obtained via the new "GP Access to Community Diagnostics" initiative.

Methods: A mixed-methods design was employed.

Point of care ultrasound: Current and future directions for Acute Medicine.

Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) represents an exciting tool for current and future acute care practitioners. POCUS has come a long way in a short space of time and its widespread implementation may well be one of the biggest changes seen in acute medicine across the next decade. This narrative review explores the increasing evidence base for the accuracy of POCUS use in various acute scenarios, whilst also addressing current gaps in the evidence and areas for potential future POCUS development.

Impact of enhancing GP access to diagnostic imaging: A scoping review.

Background: Direct access to diagnostic imaging in General Practice provides an avenue to reduce referrals to hospital-based specialities and emergency departments, and to ensure timely diagnosis. Enhanced GP access to radiology imaging could potentially reduce hospital referrals, hospital admissions, enhance patient care, and improve disease outcomes. This scoping review aims to demonstrate the value of direct access to diagnostic imaging in General Practice and how it has impacted on healthcare delivery and patient care.

GPs at the Edge: a quantitative description of Irish Rural General Practice.

Introduction: Currently, more than 1.6 million Irish people live rurally. Rural populations in Ireland are older and have more health needs compared with younger urban areas.

Heartwatch: an Irish cardiovascular secondary prevention programme in primary care, a secondary analysis of patient outcomes.

Objectives: To investigate patient follow-up data from Heartwatch: Ireland's secondary prevention programme for cardiovascular disease delivered in general practice.

Design: Retrospective descriptive study based on secondary analysis of routinely collected data from Heartwatch.

Setting: Heartwatch targeted 20% of general practices in Ireland and recruited 475 general practitioners across 325 practices.

Single Pedicle Advancement Flap Models for Teaching Veterinary Reconstructive Surgical Techniques.

Reconstructive surgical techniques are used in both general and referral veterinary practice to facilitate closure of challenging wound defects. During veterinary studies, there are often limited opportunities for students to practice these techniques on live patients or cadavers. Surgical models, including suture pads and ovariohysterectomy models, have been successfully incorporated into veterinary teaching, providing students with additional practice.

The Role of Accurate Self-Assessments in Optimizing Mate Choice.

Individuals are thought to seek the best possible romantic partner in exchange for their own desirability. We investigated whether individuals' self-evaluations were related to their partner choices and whether the accuracy of these self-evaluations was associated with mating outcomes. Participants ( = 1,354) took part in a speed-dating study where they rated themselves and others on mate value and indicated their willingness to date each potential partner.

Detection of companion galaxies around hot dust-obscured hyper-luminous galaxy W0410-0913.

The phase transition between galaxies and quasars is often identified with the rare population of hyper-luminous, hot dust-obscured galaxies. Galaxy formation models predict these systems to grow via mergers, that can deliver large amounts of gas toward their centers, induce intense bursts of star formation and feed their supermassive black holes. Here we report the detection of 24 galaxies emitting Lyman-α emission on projected physical scales of about 400 kpc around the hyper-luminous hot dust-obscured galaxy W0410-0913, at redshift z = 3.

The extraordinary success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations in controlling the effects of this pandemic has been a global role model. Until early 2021, in spite of their high risk status, dispersed population and fear of health services due to racism, Indigenous outcomes were better than those for non-Indigenous.

Biomass and salt-dependent effects of Bacillus spores on radionuclide migration from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.

Spores of a Bacillus sp., isolated from radioactive waste, were tested for their ability to influence the fate and transport of neodymium (Nd) under high salt conditions expected at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) nuclear waste repository. Spores were suspended in neodymium-spiked saline solutions up to 4 M NaCl, and concentrations of Nd and the complexing agent dipicolinic acid (DPA), a component of spores, were monitored along with optical densities and spore numbers.

Influence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid on the long-term oxidation state distribution of plutonium.

Spectrophotometry was used to study the effect of EDTA on plutonium oxidation state distribution as a function of time, pH, and ligand-to-metal ratio (L/M) under anoxic conditions. Novel Pu(V)-EDTA absorption bands were identified at 571, 993, 1105, and 1150 nm with molar absorption coefficients of 15 ± 1, 6 ± 1, 10 ± 1, and 10 ± 1 cmM, respectively. Pu(V)-EDTA spectral changes occurred at L/M < 1, indicating only PuO(EDTA) formed with logK = 3.

Treatable but not curable cancer in England: a retrospective cohort study using cancer registry data and linked data sets.

Objectives: This study estimates the prevalence of cancers that are categorised as treatable but not curable (TbnC) in England. It provides a quantification of the population and a framework to aid identification of this group to enable the design of tailored support services.

Design: Through consultation with clinical and data experts an algorithmic definition of TbnC was developed.
