Unlabelled: Mudstones and shales serve as natural barrier rocks in various geoenergy applications. Although many studies have investigated their mechanical properties, characterizing these parameters at the microscale remains challenging due to their fine-grained nature and susceptibility to microstructural damage introduced during sample preparation. This study aims to investigate the micromechanical properties of clay matrix composite in mudstones by combining high-speed nanoindentation mapping and machine learning data analysis.

Extracting mechanical data of thin films on rigid substrates using nanoindentation is compromised by the mechanical properties of underlying substrates, which may falsify the obtained results. With ongoing miniaturization, the substrate influence becomes more pronounced. In this study we present an experimental approach to extract the true Young's modulus of crystalline-amorphous multilayers by means of nanoindentation.

As the need for miniaturized structural and functional materials has increased, the need for precise materials characterizaton has also expanded. Nanoindentation is a popular method that can be used to measure material mechanical behavior which enables high-throughput experiments and, in some cases, can also provide images of the indented area through scanning. Both indenting and scanning can cause tip wear that can influence the measurements.

Masking derivatization was introduced for the determination of residual solvents in samples containing a volatile reactive matrix component(s). Isobutylboronic acid, used in the last step of Bortezomib synthesis, represents a compound passing to the gas phase and deteriorating a chromatographic column during a headspace analysis. The masking derivatization with 1,8-diaminonaphthalene allowed a simple and straightforward conversion of isobutylboronic acid to a stable nonvolatile derivative and thus prevented gas chromatography column deterioration.
