Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how a temporary increase in leptin levels after birth, known as leptin surge, may influence future obesity risk in mice, particularly those genetically prone or resistant to obesity.
  • The research specifically examines the sources of leptin during this surge and how factors like sex and genetics affect its role in weight gain when placed on different diets.
  • Findings reveal that leptin levels at 2 weeks old can predict adult body weight and fat levels, highlighting the importance of early leptin exposure in determining obesity outcomes later in life.

The optimization design of a quadri-channel Mach-Zehnder interferometer (QMZI) of the high-spectral-resolution lidar is presented for the large-scale wind measurement. The optimized QMZI can discriminate the Doppler frequency shift generated by atmospheric wind from aerosol Mie scattering echo signals and molecular Rayleigh scattering echo signals, and then the wind information can be retrieved. The optimal optical path differences (OPDs) of QMZI are determined by theoretical and simulation analysis.

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) reduces body weight, which was attributed to induced energy expenditure (EE). Conflicting data have been published on the role of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in this effect. Therefore, we aimed to revisit the thermoregulatory effects of FGF21 and their implications for body weight regulation.

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum (X_{max}) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence dataset, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio X_{max} resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution X_{max} measurements with even a sparse radio array.

A novel lateral scanning Raman scattering lidar (LSRSL) system is proposed, aiming to realize the accurate measurement of atmospheric temperature and water vapor from the ground to a height of interest and to overcome the effect of a geometrical overlap function of backward Raman scattering lidar. A configuration of the bistatic lidar is employed in the design of the LSRSL system, in which four horizontally aligned telescopes mounted on a steerable frame to construct the lateral receiving system are spatially separated to look at a vertical laser beam at a certain distance. Each telescope, combined with a narrowband interference filter, is utilized to detect the lateral scattering signals of the low- and high-quantum-number transitions of the pure rotational Raman scattering spectra and vibrational Raman scattering spectra of N and HO.

Instantons, which are nonperturbative solutions to Yang-Mills equations, provide a signal for the occurrence of quantum tunneling between distinct classes of vacua. They can give rise to decays of particles otherwise forbidden. Using data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory, we search for signatures of such instanton-induced processes that would be suggestive of super-heavy particles decaying in the Galactic halo.

Objective: Non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) mediated by uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) can be activated via the adrenergic system in response to cold or diet, contributing to both thermal and energy homeostasis. Other mechanisms, including metabolism of skeletal muscle, may also be involved in NST. However, relative contribution of these energy dissipating pathways and their adaptability remain a matter of long-standing controversy.

The multi-channel lidar has fast acquisition speed, large data volume, high dimension, and vital real-time storage, which makes it challenging to be met using the traditional lidar data storage methods. This paper presents a novel approach to storing the multi-channel lidar data based on the principle of the tree structure, the adjacency linked list, the binary data storage. In the proposed system, a tree structure is constructed by the four-dimensional structure of the multi-channel lidar data, and a data retrieval method of the multi-channel lidar data file is given.

We search for a light Higgs boson (A^{0}) decaying into a τ^{+}τ^{-} or μ^{+}μ^{-} pair in the radiative decays of ϒ(1S). The production of ϒ(1S) mesons is tagged by ϒ(2S)→π^{+}π^{-}ϒ(1S) transitions, using 158×10^{6} ϒ(2S) events accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy electron-positron collider. No significant A^{0} signals in the mass range from the τ^{+}τ^{-} or μ^{+}μ^{-} threshold to 9.

We present the first measurement of the fluctuations in the number of muons in extensive air showers produced by ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. We find that the measured fluctuations are in good agreement with predictions from air shower simulations. This observation provides new insights into the origin of the previously reported deficit of muons in air shower simulations and constrains models of hadronic interactions at ultrahigh energies.

Blends of two long-chain branched polypropylenes (LCB-PP) and five linear polypropylenes (L-PP) were prepared in a single screw extruder at 240 °C. The two LCB-PPs were self-created via reactive extrusion at 180 °C by using dimyristyl peroxydicarbonate (PODIC C126) and dilauroyl peroxide (LP) as peroxides. For blending two virgin and three recycled PPs like coffee caps, yoghurt cups and buckets with different melt flow rate (MFR) values were used.

The influence of reactive processing, non reactive and reactive copolymers on immiscible polypropylene (PP)-polystyrene (PS) blends with varying PS concentrations (10 wt.% and 25 wt.%) was evaluated by mechanical (tensile and tensile impact), rheological (melt flow rate, extensional and dynamic rheology) and morphological (scanning electron microscopy) analysis.

Long-chain branching (LCB) is known as a suitable method to increase the melt strength behavior of linear polypropylene (PP), which is a fundamental weakness of this material. This enables the modification of various properties of PP, which can then be used-in the case of PP recyclates-as a practical "upcycling" method. In this study, the effect of five different peroxides and their effectiveness in building LCB as well as the obtained mechanical properties were studied.

High temporal and spatial resolution profiling of aerosol properties is required to study air pollution sources, aerosol transport, and features of atmospheric structures over complex terrain. A polarization Raman LiDAR with remote operation capability was developed for this purpose and deployed in the Vipava Valley, Slovenia, a location in the Alpine region where high concentrations of aerosols originating from a number of different local and remote sources were found. The system employs two high-power Nd:YAG pulsed lasers at 355 nm and 1064 nm as transmitters and provides the capability to extract the extinction coefficient, backscatter coefficients, depolarization ratio, Ångström exponent, and LiDAR ratio profiles.

We report on the first Belle search for a light CP-odd Higgs boson, A^{0}, that decays into low mass dark matter, χ, in final states with a single photon and missing energy. We search for events produced via the dipion transition ϒ(2S)→ϒ(1S)π^{+}π^{-}, followed by the on-shell process ϒ(1S)→γA^{0} with A^{0}→χχ, or by the off-shell process ϒ(1S)→γχχ. Aging is a natural, time-dependent process characterized by irreversible changes in the molecules, cells, tissues, and organs. It occurs as a result of cumulative damage at different levels of the organization, in particular by damaging proteins and DNA. There is no single definition, nor a unique attitude about when and how age arises and what are its causes.

In this study, fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) were exposed to an estimated daily human E171 consumption concentration for 20 generations. Exposure to E171 resulted in: a change in normal developmental and reproductive dynamics, reduced fecundity after repetitive breeding, increased genotoxicity, the appearance of aberrant phenotypes and morphologic changes to the adult fat body. Marks of adaptive evolution and directional selection were also exhibited.
