A novel approach to locating and surgically resecting occult metastatic foci in a 25-year-old female with a history of total thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid carcinoma was attempted. Two iodine-131 (131I) body scans were performed: one after the patient underwent a 2-3 week thyroxine withdrawal, and another the following week utilizing recombinant TSH-stimulation. Then the patient was treated with 151 mCi of 131I, and 2 weeks later, without further hormonal manipulation, she had radioguided surgery.

Background: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping by lymphoscintigraphy has changed the surgical management of regional lymph node metastases for melanoma. SLNs lying outside of traditional nodal basins are now being identified. Our hypothesis is that when preoperative lymphoscintigraphy identifies aberrant SLNs, these nodes should be excised and, if histologically positive, lymphadenectomy of the aberrant nodal basin should be performed.

Inflammatory pseudotumors (plasma cell granulomas) are localized lesions consisting of a fibrous stroma, chronic inflammatory infiltrate with a predominance of plasma cells, and an absence of anaplasia, which can mimic malignant disease by their gross appearance. Reported in many sites, they are most frequently described in the lung. Twelve cases involving the liver and biliary tract have previously been reported.

The ideal wound-support material would reinforce a wound early in the healing process when intrinsic wound strength is the weakest, yet disappear over time, preventing many of the untoward late effects seen with currently utilized nonabsorbable materials. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed absorbable material, polyglycolic acid mesh (Dexon), as a buttress for abdominal wounds closed under moderate tension. Young male rats (n = 211) were divided into three experimental groups.
