Optical microcomb underpins a wide range of applications from communication, metrology, to sensing. Although extensively explored in recent years, challenges remain in key aspects of microcomb such as complex soliton initialization, low power efficiency, and limited comb reconfigurability. Here we present an on-chip microcomb laser to address these key challenges.

Membrane models assembled on electrodes are widely used tools to study potential-dependent molecular processes at or in membranes. However, the relationship between the electrode potential and the potential across the membrane is not known. Here we studied lipid bilayers immobilized on mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAM) on Au electrodes.

The development of integrated semiconductor lasers has miniaturized traditional bulky laser systems, enabling a wide range of photonic applications. A progression from pure III-V based lasers to III-V/external cavity structures has harnessed low-loss waveguides in different material systems, leading to significant improvements in laser coherence and stability. Despite these successes, however, key functions remain absent.

Nonreciprocal optical systems have found many applications altering the linear transmission of light as a function of its propagation direction. Here, we consider a new class of nonreciprocity which appears in photon pair correlations and not in linear transmission. We experimentally demonstrate and theoretically verify this nonreciprocity in the second-order coherence functions of photon pairs produced by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a silicon microdisk.

The development of quantum technologies on nanophotonic platforms has seen momentous progress in the past decade. Despite that, a demonstration of time-frequency entanglement over a broad spectral width is still lacking. Here we present an efficient source of ultrabroadband entangled photon pairs on a periodically poled lithium niobate nanophotonic waveguide.

Although overall outpatient dispensing of opioid analgesic prescriptions has declined, there may still be overprescribing. Understanding how many opioid analgesic units, primarily tablets, are dispensed with the intention of shorter-vs longer-term use can inform public health interventions. We used pharmacy prescription data to estimate the number of opioid analgesic tablets dispensed annually in the U.

The treatment of many medical conditions requires the use of multiple drugs. A study published recently in this journal nicely illustrates the need to consider the pharmacology of potentially interacting drugs when conducting pharmacoepidemiologic studies of patient safety outcomes associated with such interactions. By examining multiple streams of data, we can piece together the risks and the mechanisms of action underlying those risks, and provide useful information for clinicians and patients to use multiple pharmacotherapies safely.

Background: Oxymorphone's metabolism does not involve the hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) system. The effect of this pharmacokinetic feature of oxymorphone on opioid prescribing is unknown.

Objective: To assess the relative frequency with which oxymorphone and oxycodone (a CYP3A-metabolized opioid analgesic) were each prescribed to patients concomitantly receiving CYP3A-modifying drugs (i.

During 2017, opioids were associated with 47,600 deaths in the United States, approximately one third of which involved a prescription opioid (1). Amid concerns that overprescribing to patients with acute pain remains an essential factor underlying misuse, abuse, diversion, and unintentional overdose, several states have restricted opioid analgesic prescribing (2,3). To characterize patterns of opioid analgesic use for acute pain in primary care settings before the widespread implementation of limits on opioid prescribing (2,3), patients filling an opioid analgesic prescription for acute pain were identified from a 2014 database of commercial claims.

Importance: Many stakeholders are working to improve the safe use of immediate-release (IR) and extended-release/long-acting (ER/LA) opioid analgesics. However, little information exists regarding the relative use of these 2 formulations in chronic pain management.

Objectives: To describe the distribution of IR and ER/LA opioid analgesic therapy duration and examine adding and switching patterns among patients receiving long-term IR opioid analgesic therapy, defined as at least 90 consecutive days of IR formulation use.

Background: Despite clinical guidelines discouraging the practice, it is well-documented that the concomitant use of benzodiazepines and opioid analgesics occurs regularly. Information on concomitant use of buprenorphine for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) of opioid use disorder (OUD) and benzodiazepines, however, is limited. Thus, we aimed to describe real-world drug dispensing patterns for the concomitant use of buprenorphine products approved for MAT and benzodiazepines.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are the first line of defense after contact of an infectious invader, for example, bacterium or virus, with a host and an integral part of the innate immune system of humans. Their broad spectrum of biological functions ranges from cell membrane disruption over facilitation of chemotaxis to interaction with membrane-bound or intracellular receptors, thus providing novel strategies to overcome bacterial resistances. Especially, the clarification of the mechanisms and dynamics of AMP incorporation into bacterial membranes is of high interest, and different mechanistic models are still under discussion.

Purpose: Despite the rise in serious adverse events paralleling increased prescription opioid analgesic use in the United States over the past 2 decades, the association between opioid analgesic dose and the risk of serious adverse health outcomes is incompletely characterized. We sought to synthesize the medical literature for observational studies examining the association between opioid analgesic dose and the risk of serious adverse health outcomes, with particular attention to the outcomes of misuse, abuse, addiction, overdose, and death.

Methods: Searching MEDLINE using PubMed and bibliography review, we identified 22 observational studies published between 2000 and 2015 that assessed the association between opioid analgesic dose and the risk of serious adverse health outcomes.

The irreversible conversion of single-site water-oxidation catalysts (WOC) into more rugged catalysts structurally related to [(trpy)(5,5'-X -bpy)Ru (μ-O)Ru (trpy)(O)(H O)] (X=H, 1-dn ; X=F, 2-dn ; bpy=2,2'-bipyridine; trpy=2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) represents a critical issue in the development of active and durable WOCs. In this work, the electrochemical and acid-base properties of 1-dn and 2-dn were evaluated. In situ resonance Raman spectroscopy was employed to characterize the species formed upon the stoichiometric oxidation of the single-site catalysts and demonstrated the formation of high-oxidation-state mononuclear Ru=O and RuO-O complexes.

Purpose: The goal of this study is to summarize trends in rates of adverse events attributable to acetaminophen use, including hepatotoxicity and mortality.

Methods: A comprehensive analysis of data from three national surveillance systems estimated rates of acetaminophen-related events identified in different settings, including calls to poison centers (2008-2012), emergency department visits (2004-2012), and inpatient hospitalizations (1998-2011). Rates of acetaminophen-related events were calculated per setting, census population, and distributed drug units.

Phosphorylation of tyrosine 48 of cytochrome c is related to a wide range of human diseases due to the pleiotropic role of the heme-protein in cell life and death. However, the structural conformation and physicochemical properties of phosphorylated cytochrome c are difficult to study as its yield from cell extracts is very low and its kinase remains unknown. Herein, we report a high-yielding synthesis of a close mimic of phosphorylated cytochrome c, developed by optimization of the synthesis of the non-canonical amino acid p-carboxymethyl-L-phenylalanine (pCMF) and its efficient site-specific incorporation at position 48.
