Age Self Care, a program to improve aging in place through group learning and incremental behavior change: Preliminary data.

Background: Few programs exist to support aging in place for older adults. Age Self Care is a novel program providing older adults with evidence-based information using group sessions embedded within the structure of a community-based organization (CBO) to facilitate behavior change and support aging in place. We report on a preliminary study of Age Self Care conducted in collaboration between the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Division of Geriatrics, At Home With Growing Older (AHWGO), and San Francisco Village (SF Village).

Digitization of Dentate and Edentulous Maxillectomy and Mandibulectomy Defects with Three Different Intraoral Scanners: A Comparative In Vitro Study.

: The objective of this study was to compare the trueness and precision of three intraoral scanners (IOSs) for the digitization of dentate and edentulous maxillectomy and mandibulectomy defects in artificial models. Four representative defect models-a dentate and an edentulous maxillectomy model and a dentate and an edentulous mandibulectomy model-were used for digital scanning. After a reference scan of each model, they were scanned with three IOSs: CEREC AC Omnicam, True Definition, and cara TRIOS 3.

Sub-Tenon's anesthesia in equine cataract surgery and vitrectomy: a retrospective case series (2018-2022).

A retrospective data analysis was performed on 17 eyes from 13 horses which underwent a sub-Tenon's injection to facilitate phacoemulsification or pars plana vitrectomy under general anesthesia between 2018 and 2022. All procedures were performed by the same veterinary ophthalmologist. Seven eyes received a sub-Tenon's dose of 7 ml lidocaine (XylocainÒ, 2 % lidocaine hydrochloride, Germany, Aspen Germany GmbH), and 10 eyes received 7 ml mepivacaine (MepinaestÒ purum 2 %, mepivacaine hydrochloride, Switzerland, Gebro Pharma GmbH).

Histologic Characterization of Tumor-Adjacent Mammary Adipose Tissue in Normal-Weight and Overweight/Obese Patients with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

Obesity is a risk factor of several types of cancer, including breast cancer. In this study, we aimed to histologically characterize the adipose tissue of the tumor microenvironment (TME) of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) in overweight/obese versus normal-weight patients. TNBC tissue sections from normal-weight (BMI) and overweight/obese patients (BMI) were stained with antibodies against CD68, CD163, CD31, CD34, and vimentin.

Nanomedicines for Dry Eye Syndrome: Targeting Oxidative Stress with Modern Nanomaterial Strategies.

Dry eye syndrome (DES) is a dynamic, chronic disease of the ocular surface and ocular appendages caused by inflammation. The most common symptoms include redness, itching, and blurred vision, resulting from dysfunction of the meibomian glands and impaired tear-film production. Factors contributing to the development of DES include environmental elements, such as UV radiation, and internal elements, such as hormonal imbalances.

Air travel in patients suffering from pulmonary hypertension-A prospective, multicentre study.

The PEGASUS study is the first multicentric and prospective assessment of the safety of air travel flying in pulmonary hypertension (PH) (NCT03051763). Data of air travel from 60 patients with PH was available. No severe adverse events occurred.

We discover 22 novel gene-sleep duration interaction loci for blood pressure, mapped to 23 genes.

Nocturnal hypoxemic burden and micro- and macrovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Background: Micro- and macrovascular diseases are common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and may be partly caused by nocturnal hypoxemia. The study aimed to characterize the composition of nocturnal hypoxemic burden and to assess its association with micro- and macrovascular disease in patients with T2D.

Methods: This cross-sectional analysis includes overnight oximetry from 1247 patients with T2D enrolled in the DIACORE (DIAbetes COhoRtE) study.

Oligonucleotide library screening for identification of virus-specific T-cell receptors.

We demonstrate an optimized oligonucleotide library-based approach for the identification of virus-reactive T-cell receptors using Epstein-Barr virus as an example. HEK293T served as antigen-presenting cells and were co-cultured with human T cells that were transduced with T-cell receptors in question. T-cell activation was detected by CD137 expression.

Virus-reactive T cells expanded in aplastic anemia eliminate hematopoietic progenitor cells by molecular mimicry.

Acquired aplastic anemia is a bone marrow failure syndrome characterized by hypocellular bone marrow and peripheral blood pancytopenia. Frequent clinical responses to calcineurin inhibition and antithymocyte globulin strongly suggest critical roles for hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell-reactive T-cell clones in disease pathophysiology; however, their exact contribution and antigen specificities remain unclear. We determined differentiation states and targets of dominant T-cell clones along with their potential to eliminate hematopoietic progenitor cells in the bone marrow of 15 patients with acquired aplastic anemia.

Inflammation and Fibrosis in Sleep-Disordered Breathing after Acute Myocardial Infarction.

Background: After acute myocardial infarction (AMI), inflammatory processes promote tissue remodeling at the infarct site. Procollagen III amino-terminal propeptide (PIIINP) is a circulating biomarker of type III collagen synthesis that has been shown to be associated with changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and predicts the occurrence of heart failure after AMI. We hypothesize that sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) promotes inflammation and myocardial fibrosis, leading to reduced myocardial salvage.

Association of Coronary Collaterals and Myocardial Salvage Measured by Serial Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging after Acute Myocardial Infarction.

Background: Coronary collateral flow in angiography has been linked with lower mortality rates in patients with coronary artery disease. However, the relevance of the underlying mechanism is sparse. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), relevant coronary collateral flow is associated with more salvaged myocardium and lower risk of developing heart failure.

Pulmonary hypertension associated with left heart disease (PH-LHD) corresponds to group two of pulmonary hypertension according to clinical classification. Haemodynamically, this group includes isolated post-capillary pulmonary hypertension (IpcPH) and combined post- and pre-capillary pulmonary hypertension (CpcPH). Weight loss induced alleviation of sleep-disordered breathing is associated with improvement of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Introduction: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are both common comorbidities in obese patients. Structured weight loss programs are effective and can reduce the incidence and severity of obesity-related comorbidities. The objective of the present analysis is to test whether weight loss induced alleviation of SDB is a predictor for improvement of NAFLD.

Vascular Plant Species Inventory of Mexico's Revillagigedo National Park: Awareness of Alien Invaders as a Prerequisite for Island Conservation.

The Revillagigedo Archipelago, located in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, stands out for its unique biological richness and endemism. These islands remained uninhabited until the second half of the twentieth century, allowing a better conservation status than on other oceanic islands. However, the continuous introduction of potentially invasive alien plant species, and the lack of adequate control or eradication actions, jeopardize the conservation and restoration of these islands' fragile ecosystems.

The null allele HLA-C*04:09N differs from HLA-C*04:01 in a frameshift mutation within its cytoplasmic domain, resulting in translation of 32 additional amino acids that are assumed to prevent cell surface expression.
