In the United States, maternal mortality, defined as all deaths during pregnancy, childbirth, and up to 365 days after the end of pregnancy, is among the highest of all developed nations. For every 1 maternal death, there are more than 100 life-threatening complications that occur related to pregnancy. However, maternal morbidity and mortality do not affect all mothers equally.
