Sexual violence against men has been significantly overlooked, and under-researched, with minimal attention paid to the influence of culture and ethnicity on survivors' experiences of abuse. This rapid review examines prevalence, disclosure, help-seeking, and criminal justice experiences of Black and Asian male survivors in the United Kingdom. Eight empirical studies published since 2003 involving Black and Asian sexual violence survivors were included through comprehensive database searches, including gray literature and reference lists.

Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common chronic liver disease worldwide affecting 20%-25% in the USA and Europe with a 60%-80% lifetime prevalence for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Fibrosis has repeatedly been demonstrated to be the major determinant of liver disease morbidity and mortality and there is currently no routine screening for liver fibrosis in at-risk T2D population.

Methods And Analysis: This 12-month prospective cohort study of automated fibrosis testing uses the fibrosis-4 score (FIB-4) in patients with T2D linked to the investigation of hospital-based versus community-based second-tier transient elastography (TE) testing.

Background: Depression affects approximately 27% of adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney failure (ESKF). Depression in this population is associated with impaired quality of life and increased mortality. The extent of inflammation and the impact on depression in CKD/ESKF is yet to be established.

Background: Staff and patient experiences of inpatient psychiatric wards can be negative, with staff suffering increasingly higher rates of burnout and aggression, and patients dissatisfied with the lack of therapeutic climate. The need for improved support for both has long been identified, yet many group types are ill defined and their effectiveness is unclear. In response, clinical psychologist-facilitated case discussion groups (CDGs) have been implemented across limited wards within an NHS Foundation Trust to develop staff formulation and reflective skills and provide dual peer and formal support.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effectiveness of psychiatric mother and baby units (MBUs) compared to non-MBU acute care for women with severe perinatal mental illness in terms of readmission rates within a year of discharge.
  • Results showed no significant difference in readmission rates between women who received MBU care and those who received other forms of acute care, while service satisfaction was notably higher in the MBU group.
  • The authors conclude that although MBU care did not lead to lower readmission rates, future research should focus on understanding the key elements that contribute to better outcomes in specialized perinatal care.

The health benefits of breastfeeding are well-established but for mothers with severe mental illness (SMI), the decision to breastfeed can be complex. Very few prior studies have investigated the infant feeding choices of women with SMI, or the factors associated with this. Our aims were to examine antenatal infant feeding intentions and infant feeding outcomes in a cohort of women admitted for acute psychiatric care in the first postpartum year.

Background: Tampering of psychoactive medicines presents challenges to regulation and public health. However, little is currently known about what influences the decisions to treat codeine-containing medicines (CCM) with cold water extraction (CWE) from the perspective of individuals employing these techniques. The article identifies factors influencing utilisation of CWE to separate codeine from compounded analgesics, such as paracetamol and ibuprofen, found in CCM.

Objectives: To investigate the views and experiences of people who use codeine in order to describe the 'risk environment' capable of producing and reducing harm.

Design: This was a qualitative interview study. Psychological dependence on codeine was measured using the Severity of Dependence Scale.

Introduction: Research into what constitutes the best and most effective care for women with an acute severe postpartum mental disorder is lacking. The effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of psychiatric mother and baby units (MBUs) has not been investigated systematically and there has been no direct comparison of the outcomes of mothers and infants admitted to these units, compared with those accessing generic acute psychiatric wards or crisis resolution teams (CRTs). Our primary hypothesis is that women with an acute psychiatric disorder, in the first year after giving birth, admitted to MBUs are significantly less likely to be readmitted to acute care (an MBU, CRTs or generic acute ward) in the year following discharge than women admitted to generic acute wards or cared for by CRTs.
