Efficient neurotransmission is essential for organism survival and is enhanced by myelination. However, the genes that regulate myelin and myelinating glial cell development have not been fully characterized. Data from our lab and others demonstrates that , which encodes for a small GPI-anchored glycoprotein, is highly expressed in developing zebrafish, rodent, and human oligodendrocytes (OLs) and Schwann cells (SCs), and that patients with CD59 dysfunction develop neurological dysfunction during early childhood.

Methods: Neonatal New Zealand rabbits received indomethacin and gentamicin (AKI) or saline (control) for four days followed by cationic ferritin (CF) at six weeks.
Background: Spinal motor nerves are essential for relaying information between the central and peripheral nervous systems. Perturbations to cell types that comprise these nerves may impair rapid and efficient transmission of action potentials and alter nerve function. Identifying ultrastructural changes resulting from defects to these cellular components via transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can provide valuable insight into nerve function and disease.
