Disabled people are disproportionately incarcerated and segregated from society through a variety of institutions. Still, the links between disability and incarceration are underexplored, limiting understanding of how carceral institutions punish and contribute to the social exclusion of disabled people. Using data from the 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates, we estimated disability prevalence in state and federal prisons, assessing disparities by race, ethnicity, and sex, and we examined inequities in previous residence in other "punitive" and "therapeutic" institutions.

Positive Healthcare Encounters for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Accommodations During Surgical Procedures.

Children with autism spectrum disorder have unique needs during medical procedures involving anesthesia. However, with early patient identification, provider champions can adapt their practice to better serve this population, thereby improving patient satisfaction and outcomes. This article describes a novel protocol developed by an anesthesia resource center to modify care for children with autism spectrum disorder and their families.

Screening Instruments for Developmental and Behavioral Concerns in Pediatric Hispanic Populations in the United States: A Systematic Literature Review.

Background: Racial and ethnic disparities in the identification of developmental and behavioral concerns in children are public health problems in the United States. Early identification of developmental delay using validated screening instruments provides a pathway to prevention and intervention in pediatric health care settings. However, the validity of Spanish-language screening instruments, used in clinical settings in the United States, has not been systematically examined.
