Outcomes of Allograft Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction in Children and Adolescents with Hypermobility.

Introduction: Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is used to treat patellofemoral instability either in isolation or in combination with other procedures. Use of allograft can preserve native tissue in children and can be advantageous in patients with connective tissue disorders, including ligamentous laxity. There is limited evidence regarding functional outcomes of allograft MPFL reconstruction in children and adolescents.

Collection of cancer Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) to link with primary and secondary electronic care records to understand and improve long term cancer outcomes: A protocol paper.

Introduction: More people are living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. There is limited understanding of the long-term effects of cancer and cancer treatment on quality of life and personal and household finances when compared to people without cancer. In a separate protocol we have proposed to link de-identified data from electronic primary care and hospital records for a large population of cancer survivors and matched controls.

Spontaneous resolution of a giant keratoacanthoma penetrating through the nose.

Although keratoacanthomas are common and spontaneous resolution well recognized, case reports with photographic documentation of resolution are few. The subtype of giant keratoacanthoma (GKA) can give rise to severe cosmetic destruction because of their size and their predilection for cosmetically sensitive areas (nose and eyelids). Spontaneous resolution of GKAs has not been widely reported.

Dysfunction of the posterior cruciate ligament in total knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is typically carried out either with retention (CR) of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) or with sacrifice of this ligament and implantation of a posterior stabilised (PS) prosthesis. This paper investigates a comparison of PCL function in knees treated for osteoarthritis with TKA where the PCL is preserved to those knees treated with TKA and posterior stabilisation.

Methods: One hundred and sixty-eight patients (232 knees) who had undergone TKA with either a PS or CR implant were included in the study.

Topical photodynamic therapy in the treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa.

Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is well established for the treatment of malignant and pre-malignant skin lesions and now it is increasingly used to treat benign dermatological conditions. The studies reporting the use of PDT in hidradenitis suppurativa are reviewed. Though small in number, there is considerable variation in the application of topical photosensitisers, light sources used and treatment regimes.

Basal cell carcinoma with a sarcomatous component (carcinosarcoma): a series of 5 cases and a review of the literature.

Cutaneous carcinosarcomas are rare biphasic malignant tumors with a malignant epithelial component together with malignant stroma. Five cases treated in the Yorkshire region of England between 2003 and 2006 are presented. The patients were male with an age range from 58 to 84 years.

Microbiological effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in healthy volunteers: a comparative study using methyl aminolaevulinate and hexyl aminolaevulinate cream.

Background: Acne vulgaris is a common skin problem that affects up to 90% of adolescents. Colonization of the duct with Propionibacterium species is one of the factors implicated in the development of acne. Owing to the increasing incidence of antibiotic resistance, there has been an greater interest in the development of new methods to treat acne.

The inner gel component of Aloe vera suppresses bacterial-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines from human immune cells.

The present study was carried out to examine the anti-inflammatory activity of the inner leaf gel component of Aloe barbadensis Miller. A simple in vitro assay was designed to determine the effect of the inner gel on bacterial-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine production, namely TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta, from peripheral blood leukocytes stimulated with Shigella flexneri or LPS. This report describes the suppression of both cytokines with a freeze-dried inner gel powder and a commercial health drink from the same source.

Topical photodynamic therapy for non-cancerous skin conditions.

Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a non-invasive therapeutic modality which is developing increasing use in dermatology. It is a well established treatment for pre-malignant and malignant skin tumours and over recent years there has also been encouraging evidence for its use in treating benign cutaneous disorders. We review the literature and clinical trials utilising topical PDT for non-cancerous skin conditions.

Compliance of renal transplant recipients with advice about sun protection measures: completing the audit cycle.

Renal transplant recipients are at increased risk for development of nonmelanoma skin carcinoma, owing to a number of causes, including ultraviolet exposure. It has been shown that, despite education, there is poor compliance by these patients with the advice given for protecting their skin from the sun. This repeat study was conducted to determine whether there had been an improvement in compliance over the last 6 years.

Efficacy of oral isotretinoin in the control of skin and nasal colonization by antibiotic-resistant propionibacteria in patients with acne.

Background: Skin colonization by antibiotic-resistant propionibacteria is commonplace among acne patients globally. Increasing attention is now being paid to how resistance rates might be reduced to preserve the future efficacy of antibiotics, especially erythromycin and clindamycin in acne therapy.

Objective: To assess the efficacy of oral isotretinoin in the control of antibiotic-resistant propionibacteria.

Subungual Bowen's disease treated by topical aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy.

A 66-year-old man presented with an 18-month history of progressive nail dystrophy involving his left index finger. A diagnostic biopsy specimen confirmed the clinical suggestion of subungual Bowen's disease (carcinoma in situ). Various treatment options were considered, and the decision was made to treat with photodynamic therapy using topical 5-aminolevulunic acid administered as two treatments 4 weeks apart.

Investigation of the use of the pulsed dye laser in the treatment of Bowen's disease using 5-aminolaevulinic acid phototherapy.

Background: The use of 5-aminolaevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) for the treatment of Bowen's disease is well established. However, treatment with a continuous light source has the disadvantage of prolonged treatment time during which patients often experience significant discomfort requiring the use of local anaesthetic.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of the pulsed dye laser (PDL) as the light source for photoactivation of the protoporphyrin IX to treat Bowen's disease by PDT.

An unusual case of a compound depressed skull fracture after an assault with a stiletto heel.

Compound depressed skull fractures occur commonly from assault with various sharp and blunt objects. The use of a stiletto heeled shoe as an offensive weapon has not been reported before as a cause of such an injury. However unusual the history of assault, a clear picture of the mechanism of the injury is vital.
