Automated fall risk assessment of elderly using wearable devices.

Introduction: Falls cause major expenses in the healthcare sector. We investigate the ability of supporting a fall risk assessment by introducing algorithms for automated assessments of standardized fall risk-related tests via wearable devices.

Methods: In a study, 13 participants conducted the standardized 6-Minutes Walk Test, the Timed-Up-and-Go Test, the 30-Second Sit-to-Stand Test, and the 4-Stage Balance Test repeatedly, producing 226 tests in total.

Generated Ru(0)-HRO@Na-β From Hydrous Ruthenium Oxide (HRO)/Na-β: An Energy-Efficient Catalyst for Selective Hydrogenation of Sugars.

A green process for the hydrogenation of sugars to sugar alcohols was designed in aqueous medium using hydrous ruthenium oxide (HRO) as a pre-catalyst supported on Na-β zeolite. Under optimized reaction conditions, sugars such as xylose, glucose, and mannose converted completely to the corresponding sugar alcohols xylitol, sorbitol, and mannitol with 100% selectivity. The pre-catalyst (HRO) is converted to active Ru(0) species during the reaction under H, which is responsible for the hydrogenation.

Funding opportunities for health research in India - A technical scan.

Health research plays an integral part in scientific and academic innovation in health care. India, a rapidly developing country, showed a tremendous increase in the number of health research projects and publications in recent years. Given the broad spectrum of health research areas and a vast number of funding agencies that fund specific areas, it is difficult to gain knowledge about them from a single source.

Novel High-Throughput Strategy for the Aqueous Solubility Assessment of Peptides and Proteins Exhibiting a Propensity for Gelation: Application to the Discovery of Novel Antibacterial Teixobactin Analogues.

A novel high-throughput aqueous solubility assay was developed for peptides and proteins exhibiting a high gelling propensity (in this case, antibacterial teixobactin analogues). By integrating the assessment of gel formation, as indicated by an increase in the solution viscosity, into the peptide equilibrium solubility screening assay, we were able to estimate the "free-flowing solubility", which is defined as the concentration at which the peptide solution not only is fully dissolved but also is a liquid exhibiting ideal flowing characteristics. In this workflow, peptide solutions passing the turbidity assessment were further screened by viscosity measurements based on nanobead-assisted dynamic light scattering analysis in a 96-well plate.

The effect of Cu additions in FePt-BN-SiO heat-assisted magnetic recording media.

Structural and chemical order impact magnetic properties of solids, which are governed by spin-orbit coupling and exchange interaction. The ordered L1 phase of FePt is a key material to heat-assisted magnetic recording; to enable high storage density, a solid understanding is needed of structural and chemical disorder at small length scales, as well as associated modifications of the electronic band structure. Here, we investigate the effect of boron and copper additions (≲6 mol% Cu) on structural and magnetic properties of L1 FePt granular media.

Scandium(III) Triflate-Catalyzed Reaction of Aroyl-Substituted Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes with 1-Naphthylamines: Access to Dibenzo[,]acridines.

The reaction of aroyl-substituted donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes with two equivalents of 1-naphthylamines in the presence of a catalytic amount of scandium(III) triflate provides access to dibenzo[,]acridines. The key steps of the transformation are the formation of nucleophilic ring-opening products from the D-A cyclopropanes and 1-naphthylamines and their subsequent fragmentation and cyclization. The method has a reasonable substrate scope, and the products are formed in 50-70% yields.

A Comparative Study of Fine-Needle Aspiration and Nonaspiration Cytology Diagnosis in Thyroid Lesions.

Background: Aspiration cytology is one of the first-line diagnostic tests in thyroid malignancies. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in thyroid lesions causes hemorrhagic smear and cell trauma, often leading to the repetition of smear and delay in diagnosis. This study was conducted to identify the diagnostically superior technique with regard to thyroid swelling and to assess the quality of smears obtained from FNAC and fine-needle nonaspiration cytology (FNNAC).

Lessons of the month: Co-infection with SARS-CoV-2 and influenza B virus in a patient with community-acquired pneumonia.

Why we only infrequently detect or report two or more respiratory viruses co-infecting an adult host is poorly understood. We report a rare case where influenza B and SARS-CoV-2 caused viral pneumonia in a 74-year-old man diagnosed during the UK winter epidemic/pandemic for these organisms and discuss concepts of co-infection.

Antenatal Depressive Symptoms and Neurodevelopment Outcomes in Children at 30 Months. A Study From South India.

Background: Prevalence of antenatal depression in low and middle income countries is high. However studies examining the association between maternal antenatal depression and early childhood development from these countries are scarce. The objective of the study was to examine the association between antenatal depressive symptoms assessed serially during pregnancy and child neurodevelopment outcomes in mother-child dyads part of a randomized control trial of maternal B12 supplementation during pregnancy.

Preparing for an Increased Need for Abortion Access in India during and after COVID-19: Challenges and Strategies.

Access to safe abortion is a reproductive rights and justice issue, and it is imperative that safe abortion access during and after the COVID-19 pandemic is a reality for all. India imposed a lockdown in March 2020 to contain the spread of the pandemic. Limited mobility, lack of clarity about abortion as an essential service and abortion as a service permitted through telemedicine, shut down of services providing long-acting and permanent methods of contraception, and changes to decision-making about birthing and parenting during a pandemic are factors that may impact the demand for abortion during and after the lockdown.

Comparison of endpoint of subjective cycloplegic refraction with artificial aperture and post-mydriatic test among adults with refractive error.

Purpose: There is a need to understand the requirement for the post-mydriatic test (PMT) among adults for the final prescription of spectacles as this test increases the cost of eye care and causes inconvenience to the patient because of the additional visit to an eye care practitioner. We aim to compare the cycloplegic subjective refraction using apertures of various sizes and PMT in an adult population.

Methods: This prospective crossover study was conducted under standard settings in an eye clinic.

Reduction in Stigma Drivers Partially Mediates the Effect of a Stigma Reduction Intervention Among Nursing Students in India: The DriSti Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: HIV stigma in health care settings acts as a significant barrier to health care. Stigma drivers among health professionals include transmission fears and misconceptions and pre-existing negative attitudes toward marginalized groups vulnerable to HIV. The DriSti intervention, consisted of 2 sessions with videos and interactive exercises on a computer tablet and one interactive face-to-face group session, mostly tablet administered, was designed to target key stigma drivers that included instrumental stigma, symbolic stigma, transmission misconceptions and blame to reduce HIV stigma, and discrimination among nursing students (NS) and ward staff and tested in a cluster randomized trial.

The virus that causes COVID-19 was designated as severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Several studies have reported chemosensory dysfunction, such as anosmia and ageusia, as common findings in COVID-19 positive patients.

Novel Coronavirus-disease-2019 (Covid-19) caused by the severe-acute-respiratory-syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) shows a rapid spread all over the world. It's still an ongoing pandemic with greater morbidity and mortality. In our study, we describe clinical features, and demographics of patients presenting to our tertiary care center with Covid-19 infection.

sn-spMF: matrix factorization informs tissue-specific genetic regulation of gene expression.

Genetic regulation of gene expression, revealed by expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs), exhibits complex patterns of tissue-specific effects. Characterization of these patterns may allow us to better understand mechanisms of gene regulation and disease etiology. We develop a constrained matrix factorization model, sn-spMF, to learn patterns of tissue-sharing and apply it to 49 human tissues from the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) project.

The increasing need for observation in seawater or ocean monitoring systems has ignited a considerable amount of interest and the necessity for enabling advancements in technology for underwater wireless tracking and underwater sensor networks for wireless communication. This type of communication can also play an important role in investigating ecological changes in the sea or ocean-like climate change, monitoring of biogeochemical, biological, and evolutionary changes. This can help in controlling and maintaining the production facilities of outer underwater grid blasting by deploying unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs).

Reorienting rabies research and practice: Lessons from India.

In this article, we reflect on the institutional and everyday realities of people-street dog relations in India to develop a case for decolonised approaches to rabies and other zoonoses. Dog-mediated rabies in Asia and Africa continues be a major concern in transnational public health agendas despite extensive research and knowledge on its prevention. In India, which carries 35% of the global rabies burden and has large street dog populations, One Health-oriented dog population management programmes have been central to the control of this zoonotic disease.

HIV Transmission Worry Predicts Discrimination Intentions Among Nursing Students and Ward Staff in India.

Health facility stigma impedes HIV care and treatment. Worry of contracting HIV while caring for people living with HIV is a key driver of health facility stigma, however evidence for this relationship is largely cross-sectional. This study evaluates this relationship longitudinally amongst nursing students and ward staff in India.

Retrospective Analysis of Subtarsal Incision in Maxillofacial Trauma.

Introduction: Subciliary, subtarsal and infraorbital incisions are the conventional cutaneous approaches to infraorbital rim and floor.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study was developed with 30 patients reviewed over a period of 12 months.

Result: No cases showed ectropion in minimum 12-month follow-up.

A case series of topiramate-induced angle closure crisis - an ophthalmic emergency.

Background: Topiramate is a drug commonly used by physicians. However, it has various systemic and ocular adverse effects. Bilateral angle closure crisis is a potentially blinding adverse reaction that is seldom reported in non-ophthalmic journals.

The Effectiveness of Intracameral Moxifloxacin Endophthalmitis Prophylaxis for Trabeculectomy.

Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of intracameral moxifloxacin prophylaxis in reducing acute postoperative endophthalmitis after trabeculectomy and combined trabeculectomy plus cataract extraction.

Design: Retrospective clinical registry analysis.

Participants: Patients undergoing either trabeculectomy or trabeculectomy plus cataract extraction at Aravind Eye Hospitals (AEH) between 2009 and 2018 (inclusive).
