Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas are indolent, astrocytic tumors usually located in the superficial cerebral cortex. They have not been described as occurring in the pineal region. We describe a patient with an astrocytic tumor arising in the pineal region that fulfilled all of the morphologic and immunohistochemical criteria of a pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma.

Spinal extradural cysts do not normally present as a visible paraspinal mass or cause compression of the abdominal organs. The authors describe the case of a 9-month-old boy with multiple spinal extradural cysts. The largest of these cysts was along the right L-2 nerve root with significant extraspinal extension resulting in a visible slow-growing swelling in the right paraspinal region and radiological evidence of compression of the right kidney with hydronephrosis.

Thirty lactating Beetle-sannen crossbred goats were randomly divided into 3 groups based on first fortnight milk yield, and then adjusted to body weights to study the effect of fibrolytic enzyme supplementation on digestibility and milk production. Goats in the control group (C) were fed 500 g of concentrate supplement (CS) without exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (control; CG) or CS fortified with cellulase and xylanases @ of 4000 and 12500 (EG(1)) or 8000 and 18 750 IU/kg (EG(2)), respectively. Trichome patterning in Arabidopsis serves as a model system for de novo pattern formation in plants. It is thought to typify the theoretical activator-inhibitor mechanism, although this hypothesis has never been challenged by a combined experimental and theoretical approach. By integrating the key genetic and molecular data of the trichome patterning system, we developed a new theoretical model that allows the direct testing of the effect of experimental interventions and in the prediction of patterning phenotypes.

We propose a new maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector, without the need for explicit channel coding, to lessen the impact of communication channel errors on compressed image sources. The MAP detector exploits the spatial correlation in the compressed bitstream as well as the temporal memory in the channel to correct channel errors. Recent upsurge in the interest of breast cancer metastasis is partly attributed to the discovery of novel, yet unclear, mechanisms of breast cancer interaction with sites of distant metastasis such as the bone marrow microenvironment. In this review, we discuss the significance of the interactions between breast cancer cells and cells of the bone marrow. Background: Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis is a rare, autosomal recessive, inherited lipid storage disease characterized by accumulation of cholestanol and cholesterol in most tissues. The disease is caused by mutations in the sterol 27-hydroxylase gene, leading to a block in bile synthesis, with accumulation of substrates for this enzyme, including cholesterol, resulting in an increase in the conversion of cholesterol to cholestanol.

Using bioinformatics techniques and sequence analyses algorithms, a comparative study between human and rodents revealed similarity in the behavior of genes involved in the control of energy homeostasis. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) modulates the secretion and actions of insulin, leptin, ghrelin, various neurotransmitters and peptides, and pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in energy homeostasis suggesting that it (BDNF) has a significant role in the pathobiology of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Based on these evidences, we propose that obesity and type 2 diabetes could be disorders of the brain and BDNF could serve as a biomarker in predicting their development.

Skeletal muscles arise by fusion of precursor cells, myoblasts, into multinucleated fibers. In vertebrates, mechanisms controlling this essential step in myogenesis remain poorly understood. Hedgehog proteins play critical roles in organizing the embryonic development of animals, largely through modulation of target gene expression. Little is currently known, however, about the kinds and numbers of genes whose expression is controlled, directly or indirectly, by Hedgehog activity. Using techniques to globally repress or activate Hedgehog signaling in zebrafish embryos followed by microarray-based expression profiling, we have discovered a cohort of genes whose expression responds significantly to loss or gain of Hedgehog function.

An early biochemical change in the Parkinsonian substantia nigra (SN) is reduction in total glutathione (GSH + GSSG) levels in affected dopaminergic neurons prior to depletion in mitochondrial complex I activity, dopamine loss, and cell death. We have demonstrated using dopaminergic PC12 cell lines genetically engineered to inducibly down-regulate glutathione synthesis that total glutathione depletion in these cells results in selective complex I inhibition via a reversible thiol oxidation event. Here, we demonstrate that inhibition of complex I may occur either by direct nitric oxide (NO) but not peroxinitrite-mediated inhibition of complex I or through H2O2-mediated inhibition of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle enzyme alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (KGDH) which supplies NADH as substrate to the complex; activity of both enzymes are reduced in PD.

This prospective, hospital based, descriptive study was designed to compare improvement in quality of life (QOL) score with objective measures of pulmonary function in children with persistent bronchial asthma receiving inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy. QOL score (measured by an indigenous tool), forced expiratory volume in first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and asthma symptom score were measured in 20 newly diagnosed children with persistent asthma- before, during and eight weeks after ICS therapy. In Arabidopsis, based on the randomly misshapen phenotype of leaf epidermal trichomes, eight genes have been grouped into a 'DISTORTED' class. Three of the DIS genes, WURM, DISTORTED1 and CROOKED have been cloned recently and encode the ARP2, ARP3 and ARPC5 subunits respectively, of a conserved actin modulating ARP2/3 complex. Here we identify a fourth gene, DISTORTED2 as the Arabidopsis homolog of the ARPC2 subunit of the ARP2/3 complex.

A group of microtubule-associated proteins called +TIPs (plus end tracking proteins), including EB1 family proteins, label growing microtubule ends specifically in diverse organisms and are implicated in spindle dynamics, chromosome segregation, and directing microtubules toward cortical sites. Here, we report three new EB1-like proteins from Arabidopsis and provide the intracellular localization for AtEB1, which differs from all known EB1 proteins in having a very long acidic C-terminal tail. In marked contrast to other EB1 proteins, the GFP-AtEB1 fusion protein localizes not only to microtubule plus ends but also to motile, pleiomorphic tubulovesicular membrane networks that surround other organelles and frequently merge with the endoplasmic reticulum.

Several exciting new scientific advances have been made in the past decade toward both understanding the causes of and finding a cure for Parkinson's disease. Heartened by an acceleration in research findings in the past several years, the government has recently called for an infusion of funds from both the National Institutes of Health and private foundations into this burgeoning area of biomedical research.
