A set of PdL, PdL, and PdL-type single-, double-, and triple-cavity cages are prepared by complexation of Pd(NO) with designer bis-monodentate (), tris-monodentate (), and tetrakis-monodentate () ligands. The PdL cage exists in equilibrium with a PdL cage; the equilibrium shifted to PdL at 70 °C or upon addition of pyrazine--dioxide (PZDO). The PdL cage binds a PZDO molecule using electrostatic, bifurcated H-bonding and overcoordinated H-bonding interactions.

A low-symmetry binuclear complex of the PdL'L type and an extremely rare trinuclear complex of the PdL type are produced by self-assembly of the ligand with -protected palladium(II) (, PdL') and palladium(II), respectively. Two isomers ( [(2,0), (2,0)] and [(1,1), (1,1)]-forms) are theoretically possible for the PdL'L-type complex whereas nine isomers can be envisaged in the case of the PdL-type arrangement.
