The current guidelines suggest routine screening for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Hepatokines seem to be promising surrogate endpoints for the diagnosis and severity of NAFLD. PCOS has its onset in adolescence and its metabolic sequalae begin during the same period.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) accounts for the majority of primary liver cancers. Early detection/diagnosis is vital for the prognosis of HCC, whereas diagnosis at late stages is associated with very low survival rate. Early diagnosis is based on 6-month surveillance of the patient and the use of at least two imaging modalities.

Background And Aims: Cirrhosis is associated with increased risk for osteoporosis and osteopenia. This study aims to further investigate this relationship by examining if etiology and severity of cirrhosis are independent predictors of bone mineral density (BMD) loss. Furthermore we examined the serum levels of osteoprotegerin (OPG) and Klotho proteins that have been involved in bone metabolism.

Worldwide, diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a major public-health problem due to its increasing prevalence in tandem with the rising trend of obesity. However, climate change, with its associated negative health effects, also constitutes a worrisome problem. Patients with DM are experiencing more visits to emergency departments, hospitalizations, morbidity and mortality during heat waves at ever-increasing numbers.

Kisspeptins are a family of neuropeptides that are known to be critical in puberty initiation and ovulation. Apart from that kisspeptin derived peptides (KPs) are also known for their antimetastatic activities in several malignancies. Herein we report recent evidence of the role of kisspeptins in cancer biology and we examine the prospective of targeting the kisspeptin pathways leading to a better prognosis in patients with malignant diseases.

Background: Several studies have provided conflicting results regarding the immune responses in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients with mixed cryoglobulinemia (MC). The importance of B-cell activating factor (BAFF) in MC has been described, but the role of interleukin (IL)-17A is less clear.

Methods: Serum concentrations of IL-17A, BAFF and 25-OH vitamin D were measured in CHC patients at baseline, end of treatment, and 6 months post-treatment with pegylated interferon-α and ribavirin, versus 12 healthy controls.

Article Synopsis
  • In severe cases of pancytopenia caused by untreated Felty's syndrome, doctors might consider starting immunosuppressive treatment with prednisone at a dose of 1 mg/kg.
  • Some physicians may be hesitant to use prednisone due to low neutrophil counts, which are crucial for fighting infections.
  • After initiating treatment, patients showed a full recovery in blood counts within 3 weeks and a 30% reduction in spleen size.

We should possibly revise our knowledge about risk assessment of splenectomized individuals with -thalassemia major. Besides their known risk of certain bacterial infection, they might be also in a risk of life-threatening primary cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and end-, multi-organ disease, in the context of their immunosuppression status. Prompt and appropriate treatment initiation can be life saving.

Objectives: Angiogenesis and inflammation have been involved in the progression of fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). Soluble CD146 (sCD146), a biomarker that was recently characterized as a novel component of the endothelial junction is implicated in endothelial proliferation. Our study evaluates the performance of sCD146 in assessing liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, and determines if its levels are related to the severity of liver disease in patients with cirrhosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Spur-cell anemia (SCA) is linked to severe liver cirrhosis and may provide insight into patient survival rates, yet its predictive value hasn’t been clearly established.
  • A study involving 116 cirrhosis patients (from 2008-2011) found that 31% had SCA, which correlated with more advanced liver disease and significantly lower survival rates compared to those without SCA.
  • The study concluded that SCA is a common condition in cirrhosis patients and serves as a strong independent indicator of mortality, suggesting it should be used alongside the MELD score to predict early death.

The cytological diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma has been significantly aided by applying a 4-probe fluorescence in situ hybridization system on endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography brushing smears, aiming mainly at the detection of hyperdiploidy. However, this approach adds little to our understanding of the genetic background of the disease. With the prospect of obtaining additional data on chromosomal aberrations, we have extended the fluorescence in situ hybridization study, with the application of 4 independent 2-probe systems in 35 patients with documented cholangiocarcinoma.
