Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the geometrical and mechanical properties of human thoracic spine ligaments subjected to uniaxial quasi-static tensile test.
Methods: Four human thoracic spines, obtained through a body donation program, were utilized for the study. The anterior longitudinal ligament (ALL), posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL), capsular ligament (CL), ligamenta flava (LF), and the interspinous ligament and supraspinous ligament complex (ISL + SSL), were investigated.
Throughout the years, anatomic studies have demonstrated numerous variations in the course of the cephalic vein (CV). There are, however, very rare cases of uncommon formation, course, or termination of the vein to which our attention should be drawn. During routine dissections conducted in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, in 2 formalin-fixed cadavers, very rare anatomical variants were found.

Methods: The study was performed on Wistar rats and on a cellular model of acute pancreatitis (AP) using AR42J cell line.
Results: First of all, we observed that during AP, the iron storage protein ferritin in the rat pancreas undergoes degradation accompanied by an increased formation of protein carbonyls.

Background: To retrospectively review the bilateral venous system within the popliteal fossa to evaluate the types of variations and their frequency seen in venous anatomy.
Materials And Methods: During routine dissection of formalin-fixed cadavers, a retrospective review of 32 bilateral (64 limbs) lower limbs obtained from adult donors was performed. Deep veins present in the popliteal fossa were evaluated according to predetermined criteria for the presence of duplication of vessels and interindividual variations in venous anatomy.
This study aimed to investigate the influence of acute (a single 15 min) and chronic (15 min daily for 21 days) exposure to forced swim (FS) test on nerve growth factor (NGF)/c-Fos cells in hypothalamic paraventricular (PV) and supraoptic (SO) nuclei, the central (CeA) and medial (MeA) amygdaloid nuclei and CA3-hippocampus in juvenile (P28) and aged (P360) rats. The double-immunofluorescence (-ir) method was used to detect NGF-ir and c-Fos-ir cells. The amount of NGF/c-Fosir cells in relation to all NGF-ir cells is shown as a percentage.

There is general agreement that oxidative stress may induce apoptotic and necrotic cell death. Recently it has been shown that NADH can be considered an important antioxidant as it reacts with peroxyl and alkoxyl radicals under in vitro conditions. Therefore, in the present study we hypothesized that an increase in intracellular NADH using specific substrates will protect RL-34 cells against cytotoxicity of 2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH), which is a peroxyl radical generating compound.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of two periods of life, namely P28 and P360, on the changes in interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) immunoreactivity (-ir) in the hippocampus (CA1, CA3, DG) and amygdala (central-CeA, medial-MeA) caused by acute and repeated open field (OF), or by forced swim (FS) exposition. Rats were divided into groups: non-stressed, exposed to acute (one-time for 15 min) and chronic stressors (21 days for 15 min daily). We found IL-1beta-ir in the control group to be higher in P360 than in P28.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis study describes the topography, borders and divisions of the globus pallidus in the Brazilian short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) and distribution of the three calcium binding proteins, parvalbumin (PV), calbindin D-28k (CB) and calretinin (CR) in that nucleus. The globus pallidus of the opossum consists of medial and lateral parts that are visible with Nissl or Timm's staining and also in PV and CR immunostained sections. Neurons of the globus pallidus expressing these proteins were classified into three types on the basis of size and shape of their soma and dendritic tree.

The posterior thoracic wall, an area drained by the azygos venous system, is a common site for surgical intervention. Since the venous part of the cardiovascular system is subject to most common variation, abnormalities in the azygos venous system are often reported. Some of the anatomical variants have significant clinical implications for computed tomography image assessment and mediastinal surgery.

The piriform cortex (PC), the primary olfactory cortex, is involved in the processes of learning and stress response and possibly plays an important role in epileptogenic activity. The results of several recent studies suggest that those PC neurons that contain neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) may play a key role during spatial learning and in the modulation of initiation, propagation and generalisation of seizures in various experimental models and may influence neuronal vulnerability after epileptic insults. The aim of this study was to characterise the pattern of distribution and morphology of nNOS-immunoreactive elements in PC of the adult rabbit.
