We explored the funding areas of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (trans), queer or questioning, and intersex individuals (2S/LGBTQI)-specific health research funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) mentioned in the grant abstracts. We analyzed the publicly available database of grant abstracts funded by CIHR from 2009-2020 to examine what types of 2S/LGBTQI-specific health outcomes would be studied and in what populations. We found that 58% of awarded grant abstracts mentioned studying sexually transmitted diseases, the majority of which was on human immunodeficiency virus.

Background: Sex and gender impacts health outcomes and disease risk throughout life. Females show greater benefits of exercise on cognition in both humans and rodents, which may be related to brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), the Val66Met polymorphism, within the human BDNF gene, causes impaired activity-dependent secretion of neuronal BDNF and impairments to some forms of memory. We evaluated whether sex and BDNF genotype (Val66Met polymorphism (Met/Met) versus wild-type (Val/Val)) influenced the ability of voluntary running to enhance cognition and hippocampal neurogenesis in mice.

Contrary to what common sense makes us believe, deliberation without attention has recently been suggested to produce better decisions in complex situations than deliberation with attention. Based on differences between cognitive processes of experts and novices, we hypothesized that experts make in fact better decisions after consciously thinking about complex problems whereas novices may benefit from deliberation-without-attention. The aim of this study was to investigate the improvement of quality of radiotherapy and compliance to the protocol amendment of EORTC study 08941. The radiotherapy-specific data were analysed from 154 patients with stage IIIA-N2 Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer who were actually irradiated after response to 3 cycles of platinum-based induction chemotherapy. The parameters of quality, assessed in 93 patients before and in 61 after protocol amendment, included: time interval between last chemotherapy course and start of thoracic radiotherapy, the use of a 3-D planning CT, dose and fractionation scheme to the primary tumour, the involved and uninvolved mediastinum, duration of radiotherapy and toxicity.

Mortality and morbidity were studied in the surgical arm of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) 08941 trial. We analysed the baseline characteristics of 350 patients who were treated in six consecutive prospective trials with one of the following regimens: cisplatin/etoposide, cisplatin/etoposide/5-fluorouracil, cisplatin/paclitaxel (weekly) and cisplatin/paclitaxel (biweekly). The aim of this study was to document the activity and toxicity of paclitaxel (Taxol)/carboplatin when used as induction chemotherapy in patients with stage IIIA N2 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) prior to definitive local treatment within a large, ongoing comparative study (EORTC 08941). 52 eligible, consenting, chemotherapy-naïve patients with NSCLC, median age of 60 years, stage IIIA N2 disease and the ability to tolerate a pneumonectomy received paclitaxel 200 mg/m2 as a 3-h infusion followed by carboplatin at an area under the concentration curve (AUC) of 6 every 3 weeks for three courses. The objective of this study was to determine the toxicities and maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of a dose-dense schedule with a fixed dose of cisplatin and escalating doses of paclitaxel in patients with metastatic or irresectable squamous cell-, adeno-, or undifferentiated carcinoma of the oesophagus. Patients received paclitaxel over 3 h followed by a 3-h infusion of a fixed dose of cisplatin of 70 mg/m(2) on days 1, 8, 15, 29, 36 and 43. The starting dose of paclitaxel was 80 mg/m(2).
