Quantification of cavitating flows with neutron imaging.

The current experimental investigation demonstrates the capability of neutron imaging to quantify cavitation, in terms of vapour content, within an orifice of an abruptly constricting geometry. The morphology of different cavitation regimes setting in was properly visualised owing to the high spatial resolution of 16 μm achieved, given the extensive field of view of 12.9 × 12.

The effect of wilderness and medical training on injury and altitude preparedness among backcountry hikers in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Background: The purpose of this study was to document the correlation between medical and wilderness training with levels of preparedness for acute mountain sickness (AMS), illness, and injury among backcountry hikers.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, convenience survey in Rocky Mountain National Park in July and August 2015. The study group consisted of 380 hikers who completed a written survey that collected information about demographics, wilderness experience, altitude experience, hiking equipment, communications devices, and trip planning.

Biochemical characterization and zinc binding group (ZBGs) inhibition studies on the catalytic domain of MMP7 (cdMMP7).

Matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7/matrilysin-1) has been implicated in many pathological conditions, such as in cancer and inflammatory diseases; therefore, MMP7 has been targeted for drugs. Success in developing a clinical inhibitor, which exhibits suitable specificity and selectivity, will likely require structural and/or kinetic evaluation of enzyme/inhibitor interactions. To enable these future studies we herein describe the over-expression, purification, and characterization of the catalytic domain of MMP7 (cdMMP7).

Adult expression of the Drosophila Lsp-2 gene.

Previous work has demonstrated expression of the larval serum protein-2 gene, Lsp-2, uniquely during the late larval and pupal stages of development in Drosophila melanogaster. Here we report that the LSP-2 polypeptide accumulates in the hemolymph throughout adult life as well. Western blot analysis using an LSP-2 antiserum reveals notable differences in the molecular weight of the larval and adult polypeptides.

Fat-body-specific expression of the Drosophila Lsp-2 gene.

The larval serum protein-2 gene (Lsp-2) of Drosophila melanogaster is expressed at a very high level in the fat body of third-instar larvae. Here we report that Lsp-2 transcription in adult flies produces a unique mRNA localized in the adult adipose tissue of the head in both sexes. The effect of adding epinephrine to spinal anesthesia performed with lidocaine in young, healthy patients was determined in a prospective, controlled, randomized double-blind study.
