Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an infectious viral disease that affects the main meat and dairy production animals, including cattle, sheep, goats and swine. It is readily transmissible and countries where the disease is present suffer harsh international trade restrictions on livestock products and serious economic losses. Vaccines are important tools to contain outbreaks and maintain the status of free with or without vaccination, as defined by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) infection caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), a Pestivirus of the Flaviviridae family, is an important cause of morbidity, mortality and economical losses in cattle worldwide. E2 protein is the major glycoprotein of BVDV envelope and the main target for neutralising antibodies (NAbs). Different studies on protection against BVDV infection have focused on E2, supporting its putative use in subunit vaccines.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly infectious viral disease that affects cattle, sheep, goats and swine causing severe economic losses worldwide. The efficacy of inactivated vaccines is critically dependent on the integrity of foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) particles. The recommended method to quantify the active ingredient of vaccines is the 140S quantitative sucrose density gradient analysis.

A highly efficient method for stable wheat transformation using hygromycin resistance as a selectable marker is described. Young embryogenic calli growing from immature wheat embryos were transformed using a gunpowder-driven microparticle accelerator. Transgenic wheat plants were determined by PCR amplification of transgene fragments and confirmed by Southern hybridization, activity of the transgene expression and by analysis of the progeny.

An influenza-like illness appeared recently among workers in a plant processing synthetic yarn. A humidifier, a cold-water spraying system, was the suspected cause. Lung function changes over the day and week and changes in blood leucocytes were studied among the workers from the suspected department and two reference populations.
