Setting And Participants: the fourth round of data collection of the surveillance system OKkio alla SALUTE took place in 2014, promoted and financed by the Ministry of Health and coordinated by the National Institute of Health in collaborations with all regions.

Controlled Complete Suppression of Single-Atom Inelastic Spin and Orbital Cotunneling.

The inelastic portion of the tunnel current through an individual magnetic atom grants unique access to read out and change the atom's spin state, but it also provides a path for spontaneous relaxation and decoherence. Controlled closure of the inelastic channel would allow for the latter to be switched off at will, paving the way to coherent spin manipulation in single atoms. Here, we demonstrate complete closure of the inelastic channels for both spin and orbital transitions due to a controlled geometric modification of the atom's environment, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Multimodal treatment of perianal fistulas in Crohn's disease: seton versus anti-TNF versus advancement plasty (PISA): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Currently there is no guideline for the treatment of patients with Crohn's disease and high perianal fistulas. Most patients receive anti-TNF medication, but no long-term results of this expensive medication have been described, nor has its efficiency been compared to surgical strategies. With this study, we hope to provide treatment consensus for daily clinical practice with reduction in costs.

Conventional Versus Biological Therapy for Prevention of Postoperative Endoscopic Recurrence in Patients With Crohn's Disease: an International, Multicenter, and Observational Study.

Background/aims: Postoperative endoscopic recurrence (PER) occurs in nearly 80% of patients 1 year after ileocecal resection in patients with Crohn's disease (CD). Biological agents were more effective in reducing the rates of PER in comparison with conventional therapy, in prospective trials. The aim of this study was to compare the PER rates of biological versus conventional therapy after ileocecal resections in patients with CD in real-world practice.

Unified approach for bioluminescence, Cerenkov, β, X and γ rays imaging.

The goal of this work is to demonstrate that a CCD-based system can be used as a unified device which allows visible, β, X and γ rays imaging. A system composed of a CCD coupled with lens mounted on a black light-tight box and a high resolution intensifying screen for the radiations conversion were used. In order to investigate the detection of different type of radiations in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed.

Smooth muscle CaMKIIδ promotes allergen-induced airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation.

Airway smooth muscle (ASM) is a key target cell in allergen-induced asthma known to contribute to airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and chronic airway remodeling. Changes in ASM calcium homeostasis have been shown to contribute to AHR although the mechanisms and Ca(2+) signal effectors are incompletely understood. In the present study, we tested the function of ASM multifunctional protein kinase Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent kinase II (CaMKII) isoforms CaMKIIδ and CaMKIIγ in allergen-induced AHR and airway remodeling in vivo.

Atomically crafted spin lattices as model systems for quantum magnetism.

Low-dimensional quantum magnetism presents a seemingly unlimited source of rich, intriguing physics. Yet, because realistic experimental representations are difficult to come by, the field remains predominantly theoretical. In recent years, artificial spin structures built through manipulation of magnetic atoms in a scanning tunnelling microscope have developed into a promising testing ground for experimental verification of theoretical models.

Direct retrospective comparison of adalimumab and infliximab in preventing early postoperative endoscopic recurrence after ileocaecal resection for crohn's disease: results from the MULTIPER database.

Background And Aims: Both adalimumab [ADA] and infliximab [IFX] seem to be effective in the prevention of early postoperative endoscopic recurrence [EPER] after ileocaecal resection in Crohn's disease [CD] patients. There is lack of data with direct comparison between the two agents in the postoperative scenario. The aim of this study was to compare the rates of EPER in patients treated with ADA and IFX after ileocaecal resection for CD.

Feasibility of Extended-interval Follow-up for Patients Receiving Warfarin.

Aims: The 2012 American College of Chest Physician Evidence-Based Management of Anticoagulant Therapy guidelines suggest an international normalized ratio (INR) testing interval of up to 12 weeks, rather than every 4 weeks, for patients with consistently stable INRs while taking vitamin K antagonists. We aimed to examine the feasibility of extended-interval follow-up in a real-world setting.

Methods: Patients receiving stable warfarin therapy for ≥ 12 weeks at baseline began extended-interval follow-up with visits occurring at 6 weeks, 14 weeks, and every 12 weeks thereafter to a maximum of 68 weeks or until they were no longer suitable for extended-interval follow-up.

Background & Aims: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is highly metastatic. Metastases spread directly into local tissue or invade distant organs via blood and lymphatic vessels, but the role of lymphangiogenesis in CRC progression has not been determined. Lymphangiogenesis is induced via vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGFC) activation of its receptor, VEGFR3; high levels of VEGFC have been measured in colorectal tumors undergoing lymphangiogenesis and correlated with metastasis.

Staging a reflective capstone course to transition PharmD graduates to professional life.

Objective: To develop and implement a capstone course that would allow students to reflect on their development as a professional, assess and share their achievement of the college's outcomes, complete a professional portfolio, establish a continuing professional development plan, and prepare to enter the pharmacy profession.

Design: Students were required to complete a hybrid course built around 4 online and inclass projects during the final semester of the curriculum.

Assessment: Faculty used direct measures of learning, such as reading student portfolios and program outcome reflections, evaluating professional development plans, and directly observing each student in a video presentation.

Incidence of ultrasound-detected asymptomatic long-term central vein catheter-related thrombosis and fibrin sheath in cancer patients.

Background: Most central venous catheter (CVC)-related deep vein thromboses (DVT) are asymptomatic and their incidence and clinical relevance are still under debate. Data on CVC-related fibrin sheaths are scarce. We investigated the incidence of asymptomatic DVT and fibrin sheaths in cancer patients with long-term CVC implantation who underwent Doppler ultrasound surveillance at 1, 6, and 12 months after implantation.

Novel biomedical applications of Cerenkov radiation and radioluminescence imaging.

The main goals of this review is to provide an up-to-date account of the different uses of Cerenkov radiation (CR) and radioluminescence imaging for pre-clinical small animal imaging. We will focus on new emerging applications such as the use of Cerenkov imaging for monitoring radionuclide and external radiotherapy in humans. Another novel application that will be described is the monitoring of radiochemical synthesis using microfluidic chips.

Refractory distal ulcerative colitis: is proctocolectomy always necessary?

Refractory distal ulcerative colitis (RDUC) is defined as persistence of symptoms caused by endoscopically proven colonic inflammation located at the rectum or left colon despite oral/topical steroids and 5-ASA. RDUC affects a small subset of patients and is associated with chronic disabling symptoms and increased social/medical costs. Moreover, patients with long-standing ulcerative colitis (UC) carry an elevated risk of developing colorectal cancer and colonic mucosa high-grade dysplasia.
