To examine the effects of aging on human skeletal muscle, 10 men and 10 women, 64 +/- 1 yr old (Mean +/- SE), and 10 men and 10 women, 24 +/- 1 yr old, were studied. All subjects were sedentary nonsmokers who were carefully screened for latent cardiovascular, metabolic, or musculoskeletal disease. Needle biopsy samples were obtained from the lateral gastrocnemius muscle and examined using histochemical and biochemical techniques.

To determine whether heart rate and left ventricular contractile sensitivity to beta-adrenergic stimulation are altered by hyperthyroidism in human subjects, the frequency, velocity and extent of left ventricular shortening at rest and during a 4-stage graded dose isoproterenol infusion were characterized in eight young healthy subjects before and after 2 weeks of daily administration of 100 micrograms of triiodothyronine (T3). The rate and extent of left ventricular shortening were determined by Doppler and two-dimensionally guided M-mode echocardiography.

To determine whether endurance exercise training can improve left ventricular function in response to beta-adrenergic stimulation, young healthy sedentary subjects (10 women and 6 men) were studied before and after 12 wk of endurance exercise training. Training consisted of 3 days/wk of interval training (running and cycling) and 3 days/wk of continuous running for 40 min. The training resulted in an increase in maximal O2 uptake from 41.

The influence of exercise intensity on thermoregulation was studied in 8 men and 8 women volunteers during three levels of arm-leg exercise (level I: 700 ml oxygen (O2).min-1; level II: 1250 ml O2.min-1; level III: 1700 ml O2.

Resting oxygen uptake, heart rate, and cardiac output increased and heart rate and cardiac output at the same submaximal exercise intensity were higher in the hyperthyroid state (P less than 0.05).

The adaptive response of maximal aerobic power (VO2max) to endurance exercise training was compared in 53 men and 57 women, aged 60-71 yr. The subjects were healthy and had been sedentary for at least 2 yr. Pretraining VO2max was measured during graded treadmill walking on two occasions.

beta-Adrenergic receptor density and responsiveness may be increased in experimental animals by physical conditioning, and the opposite effects have been observed after a single bout of exercise. To determine whether the chronic and acute effects of exercise include similar alterations in cardiovascular function in humans, we characterized heart rate, blood pressure, and distal lower extremity blood flow responses to graded-dose isoproterenol infusion in 15 young healthy subjects before and after exercise training and with and without a single preceding bout of prolonged exercise of either low or high intensity (61 +/- 1 or 82 +/- 1% maximal heart rate). VO2max was increased 18% after exercise training (43.

We hypothesized that when plasma glucose availability is maintained by carbohydrate (CHO) ingestion, trained cyclists can utilize plasma glucose at very high rates during the later stages of prolonged exercise (10). To test this hypothesis, a well-trained male cyclist was studied during exercise to fatigue at 70% VO2max when ingesting glucose throughout exercise. A primed continuous infusion of [U-13C]glucose was begun after 60 min of exercise to measure rates of plasma glucose appearance (Ra), disappearance (Rd), and oxidation (R(ox)).

In contrast to a comparison study (saline infusion), when insulin and glucagon were held constant, glucose production did not increase and plasma glucose decreased from 5.5 +/- 0.

Many older athletes are capable of endurance performances equal to those of young runners who have higher maximal O2 uptakes (VO2max). To determine whether this is a result of differences in skeletal muscle characteristics, gastrocnemius muscle biopsy samples were obtained from eight master athletes [aged 63 +/- 6 (SD) yr] and eight young (aged 26 +/- 3 yr) runners. The young runners were matched with the master athletes for 10-km running performance and for their volume, pace, and type of training.

After priming of the glucose and bicarbonate pools, [U-13C] glucose was infused continuously during 2 h of cycle ergometer exercise at 60% of pretraining peak O2 uptake (VO2) to determine glucose turnover and oxidation. Training increased cycle ergometer peak VO2 by 23% and decreased the respiratory exchange ratio during the final 30 min of exercise from 0.

The effects of dietary supplementation of dihydroxyacetone and pyruvate (DHAP) on endurance capacity and metabolic responses during arm exercise were determined in 10 untrained males (20-26 yr). Subjects performed arm ergometer exercise (60% peak O2 consumption) to exhaustion after consumption of standard diets (55% carbohydrate, 15% protein, 30% fat; 35 kcal/kg) containing either 100 g of Polycose (placebo, P) or DHAP (3:1, treatment) substituted for a portion of carbohydrate. The two diets were administered in a random order, and each was consumed for a 7-day period.

The effect of blood glucose extraction on the perception of exertion was examined during prolonged arm exercise. Eight male subjects consumed in counter-balanced order a standard daily diet containing either (1) 75 g dihydroxyacetone and 25 g sodium pyruvate (DHAP) or (2) an isocaloric amount of placebo, to manipulate blood glucose extraction. Following each 7-day diet, subjects exercised to exhaustion at 60% of peak arm oxygen consumption.

Rhythmic pumping of light hand-held weights while walking or running has become a popular approach to total body aerobic exercise. The use of handweights (HW) in conjunction with walking and running significantly increases the energy requirement of a given locomotor speed and adds variety to the choice of modes when prescribing exercise regimens (Auble, Schwartz, & Robertson, 1987; Francis & Hoobler, 1986; Graves, Pollock, Montain, Jackson, & O'Keefe, 1987). Handweighted exercise can also be conveniently and accurately prescribed for use with other exercise modalities such as bench stepping (Goss, et al.

Total tissue content of beta-receptors was measured in frozen sections of skeletal muscle biopsies incubated with 125I-labeled cyanopindolol in the presence and absence of 10(-5) M L-propranolol. The relative beta-receptor densities of type I and II fibers were delineated autoradiographically.

The specificity of aerobic training for upper-body exercise requiring differing amounts of muscle mass was evaluated in 25 college-aged male recreational swimmers who were randomly assigned to either a non-training control group (N = 9), a 10-wk swim(S)-training group (N = 9), or a group that trained with a standard swim-bench pulley system (SB; N = 7). For all subjects prior to training, tethered-swimming peak VO2 averaged 19% below treadmill values (P less than 0.01), while SB-ergometry peak VO2 was 50% and 39% below running and swimming values, respectively (P less than 0.

In the present study, the effects of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) repositioning by use of an acrylic appliance on maximum and submaximum physiologic and performance measures were evaluated in seven male and four female volunteers with documented TMJ malalignment. In an attempt to remove design inadequacies of previous research in this area, a double-blind strategy was utilized. Subjects were randomly assigned to each of four conditions: 1) normal, without a bite splint, 2) with a placebo splint with no occlusal contact so as to maintain normal jaw position, 3) with a splint that optimized jaw position, and 4) with a splint that magnified the subjects normal degree of malocclusion.
