Purpose: We present our experience of using the Anterior Combined Endopelvic (ACE) approach, which consists of a combination of a newly modified Stoppa approach with the lateral approach to the iliac crest. This approach is discussed in terms of fracture reduction and fixation, technical aspects, and the incidence of complications, and as an alternative to the ilioinguinal approach for the treatment of acetabular fractures.
Methods: A consecutive group of 34 adult patients with acetabular fractures treated surgically with the ACE approach was compared with a group of 42 adult patients treated with the ilioinguinal approach between 2010 and 2013.
We report the synthesis of Methylammonium Lead Iodide (CH(3)NH(3)PbI(3)) nanowires by a low temperature solution processed crystallization using a simple slip-coating method. The anisotropic particle shape exhibits advantages over nanoparticles in terms of charge transport under illumination. These results provide a basis for solvent-mediated tailoring of structural properties like the crystallite size and orientation in trihalide perovskite thin films, which, once implemented into a device, may ultimately result in an enhanced charge carrier extraction.

Hepatoblastoma (HB), a primary liver tumor in childhood, is often accompanied by alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) secretion, and sometimes by β-human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (β-hCG) secretion, and this can cause peripheral precocious puberty (PPP). We describe a case of PPP associated with HB. Laboratory tests showed an increase in AFP, β-hCG and testosterone values, and suppression of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels.

We investigated whether a newly created prognostic score (AIDS-related lymphoma International Prognostic Index) could better assess risk of death in patients with AIDS-related lymphomas. We randomly divided a dataset of 487 patients newly diagnosed with AIDS-related lymphomas and treated with rituximab-containing chemoimmunotherapy into a training (n=244) and validation (n=243) set.

One hundred and seventy-three patients aged > 69 treated with curative or palliative intent by clinical judgement only were grouped according to CGA into fit (46%), unfit (16%) and frail (38%) categories. Two-year overall survival (OS) was significantly better in fit than in non-fit patients (84% vs.

Pharmacokinetic studies so far have focused on plasma levels, while Pt distribution in tissues is most relevant for biological action. This study determined tissue distribution of Pt and its major metabolite, pterostilbene-4'-sulfate (Pt-S), in rats after oral administration.

In this study, we sought to evaluate the diagnostic specificity of C19MC and LIN28, and the clinical and biological spectra of C19MC amplified and/or LIN28+ CNS-PNETs. We interrogated 450 pediatric brain tumors using FISH and IHC analyses and demonstrate that C19MC alteration is restricted to a sub-group of CNS-PNETs with high LIN28 expression; however, LIN28 immunopositivity was not exclusive to CNS-PNETs but was also detected in a proportion of other malignant pediatric brain tumors including rhabdoid brain tumors and malignant gliomas.

Lenalidomide has high activity in relapsed or refractory aggressive B-cell lymphomas. In phase 2 of the REAL07 trial, we aimed to establish the safety and efficacy of the combination of lenalidomide and R-CHOP21 in elderly patients with untreated DLBCL.

Patients And Methods: We carried out a cohort study of 704 consecutive HIV-negative, HCV-positive patients with indolent NHL diagnosed and treated from 1993 to 2009 in 39 centers of the Fondazione Italiana Linfomi; 134 patients were managed with AT for lymphoma control.
Results: For entire cohort, 5-year overall survival (OS) was 78% [95% confidence interval (CI): 74%-82%] and 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 48% (95% CI: 44%-53%).
The benefit of intrathecal therapy and systemic rituximab on the outcome of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma at risk of central nervous system disease is controversial. Furthermore, the effect of intrathecal treatment and rituximab in diffuse large B-cell and Burkitt lymphoma with occult leptomeningeal disease detected by flow cytometry at diagnosis is unknown. Untreated diffuse large B-cell (n=246) and Burkitt (n=80) lymphoma at clinical risk of central nervous system disease and having had pre-treatment cerebrospinal fluid were analyzed by flow cytometry and cytology.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a wide class of molecules that exert a recognized role in gene expression modulation, but only 280 miRNAs in pig have been characterized to date.
Results: We applied a novel computational approach to predict species-specific and conserved miRNAs in the pig genome, which were then subjected to experimental validation.
Objective: We report updated results at a median follow-up of 12 years of a phase II trial assessing first-line MATILDE chemotherapy and response-tailored radiotherapy in patients with primary CNS lymphomas (PCNSL).
Methods: Forty-one HIV-negative patients (18-70 years; Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status ≤3) with histologically confirmed PCNSL received 3 courses of MATILDE chemotherapy followed by whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT). Chemotherapy activity was the primary endpoint.
Purpose: AIDS incidence and mortality have decreased since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) into clinical practice. HIV-related malignancies, namely Kaposi's sarcoma and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, have decreased, whereas non-AIDS defining tumors have been increasing. Our aim was to study the impact of HAART on natural history of lung cancer in HIV-positive patients, comparing patients with HIV-lung cancer treated in the pre-HAART era versus the HAART era.

Patients And Methods: In a subset analysis of the FOLL05 trial (NCT00774826), we investigated the prognostic role of post-induction PET (PI-PET) scan. Patients were eligible to this study if they had a PI-PET scan carried out within 3 months from the end of induction immunochemotherapy.
The Vascular Access Study Group of Italian Society of Nephrology has designed a National Register in order to create an archive that collects the data on vascular accesses more detailed than the mere indication of arteriovenous fistula with native vessels, prosthetic fistula and central venous catheter. The obstacles to such a project are represented by the absence of "uniformity" in the name of the arterovenous fistula, the difficulty in increasing the daily work of dialysis centers with another registry and finally by privacy concerns. In order to standardize the vascular accesses name the Study Group proposal is to eliminate any denomination and adopt a code-descriptive system, indicating the seat of the anastomosis (1/3 distal, middle and proximal forearm, arm or lower limb), the limb (if dominant or non-dominant), the vessels involved, the type of anastomosis and the number of interventions that the pt has undergone including the last one.

Summary Answer: Among 334 survivors who wanted to have children, the availability of cryopreserved semen doubled the odds of post-treatment fatherhood.
What Is Known Already: Cryopreservation of semen is the easiest, safest and most accessible way to safeguard fertility in male patients facing cancer treatment. Little is known about what proportion of patients achieve successful semen cryopreservation.
A specific prognostication score for hepatitis C virus-positive diffuse large B-cell lymphomas is not available. For this purpose, the Fondazione Italiana Linfomi (FIL, Italian Lymphoma Foundation) carried out a multicenter retrospective study on a large consecutive series of patients with hepatitis C virus-associated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma to evaluate the prognostic impact of clinical and virological features and to develop a specific prognostic score for this subset of patients. All prognostic evaluations were performed on 535 patients treated with an anthracycline-based induction regimen (with rituximab in 255 cases).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcute angioedema represents a cause of admission to the emergency department requiring rapid diagnosis and appropriate management to prevent airway obstruction. Several drugs, including angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and oral antidiabetics, have been reported to induce angioedema. The aim of this prospective observational study conducted in a setting of routine emergency care was to evaluate the incidence and extent of drug-induced non-histaminergic angioedema in this specific clinical setting, and to identify the class of drugs possibly associated with angioedema.

Life expectancy has impressively increased over the past century and the US population over 65 years is rapidly growing, especially those over 80 years. In fact, persons older than 80 years have increased by more than 250% between the years 1960 and 2000, and it is expected that the population aged >75 years will triple by the year 2030. With the increase of the geriatric population, there is a need for the development and validation of treatment strategies for NHL for these patients.
