To accelerate cutaneous wound healing and prevent scarring, regenerative approaches such as injecting a mechanically derived tissue stromal vascular fraction (tSVF) are currently under clinical and laboratory investigations. The aim of our study was to investigate a platform to assess the interaction between skin-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) hydrogels and tSVF and their effects on their microenvironment in the first ten days of culture. A tSVF mixed with ECM hydrogel was cultured for ten days.

In cases of large mandibular continuity defects resulting from malignancy resection, the current standard of care involves using patient-specific/custom titanium reconstruction plates along with autogenous grafts (fibula, scapula, or iliac crest segments). However, when grafts are not feasible or desired, only the reconstruction plate is used to bridge the gap. Unfortunately, metal osteosynthesis and reconstruction plates, including titanium, exhibit adverse effects such as stress-shielding and limitations in accurate postoperative irradiation (especially with proton-beam therapy).

Purpose: Placement of zygomatic implants in the most optimal prosthetic position is considered challenging due to limited bone mass of the zygoma, limited visibility, length of the drilling path and proximity to critical anatomical structures. Augmented reality (AR) navigation can eliminate some of the disadvantages of surgical guides and conventional surgical navigation, while potentially improving accuracy. In this human cadaver study, we evaluated a developed AR navigation approach for placement of zygomatic implants after total maxillectomy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between periodontitis (a serious gum infection) and various cardiometabolic and blood clotting factors in patients needing full mouth extraction compared to a control group.
  • Results showed that individuals with periodontitis had higher von Willebrand factor (VWF) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, but these factors didn't improve after extraction.
  • The research suggests that while VWF is associated with the severity of periodontitis, treating periodontitis may not significantly affect blood profiles in individuals without existing cardiometabolic disease.

The initial treatment of symptomatic disorders of the temporomandibular joint typically consists of a conservative approach, in which medication (painkillers and muscle relaxants), orofacial physiotherapy and splints are most important. In most cases, minimally invasive treatment options, such as arthrocentesis, arthroscopy or joint injections, are only considered when conservative methods provide insufficient symptom reduction. There is, however, an ongoing debate about the optimal treatment strategy due to an increasing body of evidence concerning the superior effectiveness in symptom reduction of minimally invasive treatment options with regard to conservative treatments.

Several new systems for three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging of the face have become available to assess changes following orthognathic or facial surgery. Before they can be implemented in practice, their reliability and validity must be established. Our aim, therefore, was to study the intra- and inter-system reliability and validity of 3dMD (stereophotogrammetry), Artec Eva and Artec Space Spider (both structured light scanners).

Introduction: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of the TMJ. It is characterized by progressive degradation of the extracellular matrix components of articular cartilage, with secondary inflammatory components leading to pain in the temporomandibular region and reduced mouth opening. Current treatments do not halt disease progression, hence the need for new therapies to reduce inflammation and, consequently, improve symptoms.

Clinical indications for adipose tissue therapy are expanding towards a regenerative-based approach. Adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction consists of extracellular matrix and all nonadipocyte cells such as connective tissue cells including fibroblasts, adipose-derived stromal cells (ASCs) and vascular cells. Tissue stromal vascular fraction (tSVF) is obtained by mechanical fractionation, forcing adipose tissue through a device with one or more small hole(s) or cutting blades between syringes.

Ultrasound is a promising diagnostic method when it comes to assessing the involvement of major salivary glands in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). A matter of debate is whether ultrasound of the major salivary glands (SGUS) can replace a salivary gland biopsy in the diagnosis or classification of pSS. The intra- and inter-observer reliability of SGUS was found to be good, especially when focusing on hypoechogenic areas and homogeneity, and comparable to the reliability of histopathologic characteristics of salivary gland biopsies of pSS patients.
