Severely compromised supply of patch test allergens in Europe hampers adequate diagnosis of occupational and non-occupational contact allergy. Patch testing is the only clinically applicable diagnostic method for Type IV allergy. The availability of Type IV patch test (PT) allergens in Europe, however, is currently scarce. This severely compromises adequate diagnostics of contact allergy, leading to serious consequences for the affected patients.

Neutron star mass estimates from gamma-ray eclipses in spider millisecond pulsar binaries.

Reliable neutron star mass measurements are key to determining the equation of state of cold nuclear matter, but such measurements are rare. Black widows and redbacks are compact binaries consisting of millisecond pulsars and semi-degenerate companion stars. Spectroscopy of the optically bright companions can determine their radial velocities, providing inclination-dependent pulsar mass estimates.

Artificial Intelligence That Predicts Sensitizing Potential of Cosmetic Ingredients with Accuracy Comparable to Animal and In Vitro Tests-How Does the Infotechnomics Compare to Other "Omics" in the Cosmetics Safety Assessment?

The aim of the current study was to develop an in silico model to predict the sensitizing potential of cosmetic ingredients based on their physicochemical characteristics and to compare the predictions with historical animal data and results from "omics"-based in vitro studies. An in silico model was developed with the use of WEKA machine learning software fed with physicochemical and structural descriptors of haptens and trained with data from published epidemiological studies compiled into estimated odds ratio (eOR) and estimated attributable risk (eAR) indices. The outcome classification was compared to the results of animal studies and in vitro tests.

Occupational contact allergy: The European perspective-Analysis of patch test data from ESSCA between 2011 and 2020.

Background: Occupational skin diseases have led the occupational disease statistics in Europe for many years. Especially occupational allergic contact dermatitis is associated with a poor prognosis and low healing rates leading to an enormous burden for the affected individual and for society.

Objectives: To present the sensitization frequencies to the most relevant allergens of the European baseline series in patients with occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) and to compare sensitization profiles of different occupations.

Biomechanical origins of inherent tension in fibrin networks.

Blood clots form at the site of vascular injury to seal the wound and prevent bleeding. Clots are in tension as they perform their biological functions and withstand hydrodynamic forces of blood flow, vessel wall fluctuations, extravascular muscle contraction and other forces. There are several mechanisms that generate tension in a blood clot, of which the most well-known is the contraction/retraction caused by activated platelets.

Contact allergens in moisturizers in preventative emollient therapy - A systematic review.

Background: Results of preventative emollient therapy on atopic dermatitis and food allergy trials are inconsistent. In addition to the ingredients considered beneficial, the moisturizers may contain potentially harmful haptens. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of haptens in moisturizers used in studies to prevent atopic dermatitis or food allergy and assess their correlations to the trial results.

Humidity dependence of fracture toughness of cellulose fibrous networks.

Cellulose-based materials are increasingly finding applications in technology due to their sustainability and biodegradability. The sensitivity of cellulose fiber networks to environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity is well known. Yet, there is an incomplete understanding of the dependence of the fracture toughness of cellulose networks on environmental conditions.

Searching for Gravitational Waves from Cosmological Phase Transitions with the NANOGrav 12.5-Year Dataset.

We search for a first-order phase transition gravitational wave signal in 45 pulsars from the NANOGrav 12.5-year dataset. We find that the data can be modeled in terms of a strong first order phase transition taking place at temperatures below the electroweak scale.

ELISpot assay as a diagnostic tool in drug hypersensitivity reactions.

In patients with drug hypersensitivity reactions, confirmation of causality frequently facilitates decision on a continuation or withdrawal of a given treatment. Unfortunately, identification of the culprit drug often proves difficult. In vivo methods possess well-known disadvantages like low sensitivity of skin tests or the risk of relapse during drug provocation tests.

Biological drugs in the treatment of atopic dermatitis - current recommendations of the Polish Dermatological Society, the Polish Society of Allergology, the Polish Pediatric Society and the Polish Society of Family Medicine.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is secondary to genetic, immunological and microbiological disorders as well as epidermal barrier defects, which are the main targets of therapy. The disease proceeds with periodic exacerbations. Its development and course are influenced by numerous environmental and individual factors.

Angioedema. Interdisciplinary diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations of the Polish Dermatological Society (PTD) and Polish Society of Allergology (PTA).

Angioedema is a non-inflammatory oedema of the subcutaneous tissue and/or mucosal membranes. It most commonly coexists with urticaria wheals and is considered to be a deep form of urticaria. Less commonly, it occurs in isolation and can take two basic forms: acquired angioedema and hereditary angioedema.

Patch test results with the European baseline series and additions thereof in the ESSCA network, 2015-2018.

Background: Clinical surveillance of the prevalence of contact allergy in consecutively patch tested patients is a proven instrument to continually assess the importance of contact allergens (haptens) assembled in a baseline series.

Objectives: To present current results from the European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies, including 13 countries represented by 1 to 11 departments.

Methods: Anonymized or pseudonymized patch test and clinical data from various data capture systems used locally or nationally as transferred to the Erlangen data centre were pooled and descriptively analysed after quality control.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory dermatosis with concomitant intensive pruritus, and is diagnosed both in children and adults. Atopic dermatitis-patients are predisposed to have bacterial, viral and fungal skin infections; they also suffer from an increased risk of developing food allergies (especially, at an infantile age), allergic rhinitis, or bronchial asthma (a so-called atopic march). Currently, an increasing atopic dermatitis incidence constitutes a serious medical problem that regards not only dermatology and allergology, but also paediatrics, and family medicine.

Structure, mechanical properties, and modeling of cyclically compressed pulmonary emboli.

Pulmonary embolism occurs when blood flow to a part of the lungs is blocked by a venous thrombus that has traveled from the lower limbs. Little is known about the mechanical behavior of emboli under compressive forces from the surrounding musculature and blood pressure. We measured the stress-strain responses of human pulmonary emboli under cyclic compression, and showed that emboli exhibit a hysteretic stress-strain curve.
