Many undergraduate educational experiences in biomedical design lack clinical immersion-based needs finding training for students. Convinced of the merits of this type of training for undergraduates, but unable to offer a quarter-long course due to faculty and administrative constraints, we developed an accelerated block-plan course, during which students were dedicated solely to our class for 3 weeks. Pediatric brain and spinal cancers are collectively the leading disease-related cause of death in children; thus, we urgently need curative therapeutic strategies for these tumors. To accelerate such discoveries, the Children's Brain Tumor Network (CBTN) and Pacific Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Consortium (PNOC) created a systematic process for tumor biobanking, model generation, and sequencing with immediate access to harmonized data. We leverage these data to establish OpenPBTA, an open collaborative project with over 40 scalable analysis modules that genomically characterize 1,074 pediatric brain tumors.

Introduction: Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is the most common monogentic autoinflammatory disease. We compare cases of familial Mediterranean fever-related protracted febrile myalgia and poststreptococcal myalgia, both rare disorders presenting with fever, myalgia, and inflammatory biomarkers. Although clinical symptoms may be undistinguishable, steroids are usually required in protracted febrile myalgia syndrome and poststreptococcal myalgia most often respond to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Awareness of poststreptococcal myalgia and preceding history may prevent unnecessary tests or overtreatment.

The first direct experimental observation of an electric quadrupole (E2) absorption transition between bound states of an atomic negative ion has been made. The transition was observed in the negative ion of bismuth by resonant (1+1) photon detachment from Bi^{-} via ^{3}P_{2}→^{3}P_{0} excitation. The E2 transition properties were completely independently calculated using a hybrid theoretical approach to account for the strong multilevel electron interactions and relativistic effects.
