There were nearly 50 000 opioid-related deaths in 2019 in the United States.* The dramatic frequency of opioid overdoses and fatalities has led to strained community resources, especially among hospitals and first responders (law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services). In response to rising overdose rates, many first responders have implemented programs that align public health and public safety responses to overdoses.

The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed a major paradigm shift in health care delivery with the universal adoption of telemedicine. Telehealth physical examination is particularly challenging and little guidance is available on this topic.

We conducted a review of the available literature that covers the cardiovascular manifestations of SSc: electrical conduction abnormalities, pulmonary hypertension, pericardial disease, and atherosclerosis. Within each major category, we will discuss the definition, diagnostics, and available treatment options.

In some cases, SLE may present with diverse cardiac manifestations including pericarditis, myocarditis, valvular disease, atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and arrhythmias. Heart disease in SLE is associated with increased morbidity and mortality.

Aethionema arabicum (Brassicaceae) is a dimorphic annual species that is hypothesized to survive stressful conditions during colonization due to adaptive plasticity in life-phase (vegetative vs sexual) and fruit morph (dehiscent [DEH] vs indehiscent fruits [IND]). We tested for adaptive plasticity in life-phase and fruit morphs along laboratory environmental stress gradients found in the natural habitats of Ae.

We conducted comparative analyses of the biophysical and ecophysiological properties of the two distinct diaspores (mucilaginous seed (M ) vs indehiscent (IND) fruit) in the dimorphic annual Aethionema arabicum (Brassicaceae), linking fruit biomechanics, dispersal aerodynamics, pericarp-imposed dormancy, diaspore abscisic acid (ABA) concentration, and phenotypic plasticity of dimorphic diaspore production to its natural habitat and climate. Two very contrasting dispersal mechanisms of the A.

It is controlled, both positively and negatively, by several mechanisms. High-affinity IgE receptors (FcεRI) generate a mixture of activation and inhibition signals when aggregated, the ratio of which depends on the concentration of allergen recognized by receptor-bound IgE.

Dispersal of fruits with hard pericarps (fruit coats) encasing seeds has evolved many times independently within taxa that have seed dispersal as their default strategy. The mechanisms by which the constraint of a hard pericarp determines germination timing in response to the environment are currently unknown.

Phenotypic plasticity describes the capability of a genotype to produce different phenotypes when exposed to different environmental conditions. In contrast, the constant production of a set of distinct phenotypes by one genotype mediates bet hedging, a strategy that reduces the temporal variance in fitness at the expense of a lowered arithmetic mean fitness.

Background: Premature infants have an increased risk for developing skin breakdown. Perceivably noninvasive interventions may have detrimental effects on the infant's skin.
Purpose: This case presentation describes an extreme case of nasal breakdown associated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP).
Localized scleroderma (LS) is characterized by excessive collagen deposition leading to thickening of the dermis, subcutaneous tissue or both. The outcome for most patients with localized scleroderma is directly related to the type and stage of the affected tissue. The major challenge for untreated patients is not increased mortality risk, rather deformity and growth defects from skin, muscle and bone abnormalities.

To detect optimal spatiotemporal conditions for germination, seeds act as sophisticated environmental sensors integrating information such as ambient temperature. Here we show that the delay of germination 1 (DOG1) gene, known for providing dormancy adaptation to distinct environments, determines the optimal temperature for seed germination.

Thus, elucidating conserved features of dormancy mechanisms is of great interest. The worldwide-distributed genus Lepidium (Brassicaceae) is well suited for cross-species comparisons investigating the origin of common or specific early-life-history traits.

Many autoimmune diseases occur in women of child-bearing age who may become pregnant while on therapy, which raises concerns regarding the teratogenicity of HCQ and its effect on the outcome of the pregnancy. There is a lack of data regarding the safety of HCQ during pregnancy.

Gout is a common systemic metabolic disease characterized by deposition of monosodium urate monohydrate crystals with resultant acute intense inflammation of the involved joint. The clinical spectrum ranges from asymptomatic hyperuricemia to intermittent acute episodes of gouty arthritis to chronic tophaceous gout and chronic gouty arthropathy.

Caring for a patient with this uncertain and progressive disease requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach. Many patients with multiple sclerosis will have near normal lifespan, therefore it is vital that the health care professional be aware of the potential complications that these patients face from their disease and from the aging process.

Otherwise, the origin of hepatic and/or extra-hepatic stem cells in reactive liver repopulation is under controversy. The ability of the human body to self-repair and replace the cells and tissues of some organs is often evident.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the incidence of congenital defects, spontaneous abortions, number of live births, fetal death and pre-maturity in women with autoimmune diseases taking HCQ during pregnancy.
Methods: The authors searched MEDLINE, Cochrane data base, Ovid-Currents Clinical Medicine, Ovid-Embase:Drugs and Pharmacology, EBSCO, Web of Science, and SCOPUS using the search terms HCQ and/or pregnancy. We attempted to identify all clinical trials from 1980 to 2007 regardless of language or publication status.
The human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) destroys the immune system and also induces neurological disease culminating into dementia (HIV-associated dementia). Though the HIV viral protein gp120 induces apoptosis in neuronal cells, the mechanism of action is still poorly defined. Recent studies show that cells die during apoptosis by Fas aggregation aided by the mitochondrial proapoptotic proteins.
