Background: Patellar resurfacing during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of a mobile-bearing TKA without patellar resurfacing.
Methods: We assessed the outcomes in 503 patients (600 knees) who had cemented LCS (low contact stress) mobile bearing TKA without patellar resurfacing at a minimum follow-up of 10 years.
Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare form of heart failure of unknown etiology that is associated with late pregnancy and the early postpartum period. Although the complete pathogenesis of PPCM is not completely understood, the signs and symptoms are identical to those of left ventricular heart failure. The diagnosis of PPCM is made in a parturient only after other causes of heart failure are ruled out.

Increased free radical generation, enhanced mitochondrial inducible nitric oxide (NO) synthase activity, enhanced NO production, decreased respiratory complex activity, impaired electron transport system, and opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore all have been suggested as factors responsible for impaired mitochondrial function. Melatonin, the major hormone of the pineal gland, also acts as an antioxidant and as a regulator of mitochondrial bioenergetic function.

A bipolar pulsed square wave potential is applied across a monolayer of bovine pulmonary artery endothelial cells, and the resulting current response is measured and integrated. The overall impedance of the cell layer provides an indicator of cell layer integrity.

Current pharmacological treatment of insomnia involves the use of sedative-hypnotic benzodiazepine and non-benzodiazepine drugs. Although benzodiazepines improve sleep, their multiple adverse effects hamper their application. Adverse effects include impairment of memory and cognitive functions, next-day hangover and dependence.

Eighteen in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 individuals in Northern Ireland during 2008-2009. Drawing on an embodied sociological approach, the findings show that physical pleasure, love, commitment, a desire to conceive without medical interventions and a dislike of condoms within regular ongoing relationships, shaped individuals' sense of biological risk.
