Tetracyclic 6-naphtho[2,1-]chromenes are expeditiously synthesized through a BF·OEt-mediated, three-step cascade reaction, creating new central pyran and aromatic rings. The cascade involves the addition of phenol-derived alkynyl substrates to BF-activated aldehydes followed by alkyne-Prins cyclization, Friedel-Crafts reaction, and final elimination. Aliphatic and electron-deficient aromatic aldehydes afford the products in 50-74% isolated yields, but benzaldehyde and tolualdehyde resulted in lower yields.

Sulfate aerosols' cooling effect on the global climate has spurred research to understand their mechanisms of formation. Both theoretical and laboratory studies have shown that the formation of sulfate aerosols is enhanced by the presence of a base like ammonia. Stronger alkylamine bases such as monomethylamine (MMA), dimethylamine (DMA), and trimethylamine (TMA) further increase aerosol formation rates by many orders of magnitude relative to that of ammonia.

We consider two coupled particles moving along a periodic substrate potential with negligible inertia effects (overdamped limit). Even when the particles are identical and the substrate spatially symmetric, a sinusoidal external driving of appropriate amplitude and frequency may lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the form of a permanent directed motion of the dimer. Activation of the G(s) G protein-coupled receptor Rs1 in osteoblasts increases bone mineral density by 5- to 15-fold in mice and recapitulates histologic aspects of fibrous dysplasia of the bone. IFN-beta, an effective therapy against relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, is naturally secreted during the innate immune response against viral pathogens. The objective of this study was to characterize the immunomodulatory mechanisms of IFN-beta targeting innate immune response and their effects on dendritic cell (DC)-mediated regulation of T cell differentiation. We found that IFN-beta1a in vitro treatment of human monocyte-derived DCs induced the expression of TLR7 and the members of its downstream signaling pathway, including MyD88, IL-1R-associated kinase 4, and TNF receptor-associated factor 6, while it inhibited the expression of IL-1R.

We report here a case of progressive tumefactive inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) demyelinating disease in a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive patient treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Biopsy revealed diffuse macrophage and perivascular T-lymphocytic infiltrates with severe demyelination and relative axonal sparing. The disease progressed in a centrifugal fashion, to involve bihemispheric cerebral white matter, with subsequent central necrotic changes and atrophy.

We experimentally demonstrate the occurrence of negative absolute resistance (NAR) up to about -1 Omega in response to an externally applied dc current for a shunted Nb-Al/AlO_{x}-Nb Josephson junction, exposed to a microwave current at frequencies in the GHz range. The realization (or not) of NAR depends crucially on the amplitude of the applied microwave current. Theoretically, the system is described by means of the resistively and capacitively shunted junction model in terms of a moderately damped, classical Brownian particle dynamics in a one-dimensional potential.

For an underdamped Brownian particle in a one-dimensional periodic potential we theoretically predict three unusual transport properties: (i) A static bias force (of either sign) generates an average particle motion in the opposite direction. (ii) A small bias leads to a particle transport in the direction of the bias, but upon increasing the bias the particle velocity reverses direction. (iii) For a given bias force, the particle motion follows the direction of the force for low temperatures, but upon increasing the temperature reverses its direction.

We present an unusual case of two synchronous chondroid matrix lesions in the proximal femur of a 16-year-old male. They were incidental findings, which subsequently underwent surgical excision and confirmed the imaging findings of a "kissing" osteochondroma and a periosteal/juxtacortical chondroma. We could not find another report of these findings in the English literature.

Two strains of the senescence accelerated mouse, P8 and R1,were tested in footshock-motivated passive avoidance (PA; P8, 3-21 months; R1, 3-24 months) and 14-unit T-maze (P8 and R1, 9, and 15 months) tasks. For PA, entry to a dark chamber from a lighted chamber was followed by a brief shock. Latency to enter the dark chamber 24 hours later served as a measure of retention.

Traditional beliefs about regression to the mean, difference scores (d-scores) and corrections for regression in determining the significance of individual person change have been challenged by proponents of growth curve modeling for the study of change. These challenges have generally not been adequately addressed by those proposing modifications to Jacobson's Reliable Change Index (RC). It is proposed that (1) two-wave designs and RC or variations of it are not very good methods for the scientific study of change, (2) multi-wave designs are better, (3) d-scores are unbiased data for analyzing two-wave studies, (4) RC is relatively more justifiable than most corrected or adjusted forms of RC, (5) the more appropriate place for two-wave designs and RC are in program or outcome evaluation and (6) the most appropriate function for RC is to facilitate communication among evaluators, public decision makers, providers and the public.
