Infectious meningoencephalitides represent an important differential diagnosis for meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (MUO) in dogs. Treatment of the latter requires immunosuppression, but laboratory test results for infectious agents may take several days to return. This study investigated whether the presence of masticatory muscle changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head can be used to distinguish dogs with neosporosis from those with MUO at the time of diagnosis.

Objectives: To assess the incidence and clinical findings associated with the presence of ammonium urate urolithiasis in dogs with congenital portosystemic shunts.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective review of dogs diagnosed with extrahepatic portosystemic shunts or intrahepatic portosystemic shunts in 15 referral hospitals between 2010 and 2023. Data including signalment, clinical signs, physical examination findings and clinicopathologic test results at the time of the diagnosis were collected, and the presence of ammonium urate urolithiasis was recorded.

Genetic tests available in the prenatal setting have expanded rapidly with next generation sequencing, and fetal imaging can detect a breadth of many structural and functional abnormalities. To identify a fetal genetic disease, deep phenotyping is increasingly important to generate a differential diagnosis, choose the most appropriate genetic tests, and inform the results of those tests. The Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) organizes and defines the features of human disease to support deep phenotyping, and ongoing efforts are being made to improve the scope of the HPO to comprehensively include fetal phenotypes.

Background: Congenital myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a rare congenital neuromuscular disorder associated with high morbidity and potential early mortality requiring lifelong symptomatic management. Prenatal presentations of DM1 have been associated with nonspecific ultrasound findings such as clubbed foot, polyhydramnios, ventriculomegaly, and decreased fetal movement, but many cases of DM1 have no ultrasound anomalies.

The prediction of new compounds crystal structure prediction may transform how the materials chemistry community discovers new compounds. In the prediction of inorganic crystal structures there are three distinct classes of prediction: performing crystal structure prediction heuristic algorithms, using a range of established crystal structure prediction codes, an emerging community using generative machine learning models to predict crystal structures directly and the use of mathematical optimisation to solve crystal structures exactly. In this work, we demonstrate the combination of heuristic and generative machine learning, the use of a generative machine learning model to produce the starting population of crystal structures for a heuristic algorithm and discuss the benefits, demonstrating the method on eight known compounds with reported crystal structures and three hypothetical compounds.

Importance: With advances in prenatal cell-free DNA (cfDNA) technology, the information available with cfDNA continues to expand beyond the common fetal aneuploidies such as trisomies 21, 18, and 13. Due to the admixture of maternal and fetal/placental DNA, prenatal cfDNA remains a screening test with the possibility of false-positive and false-negative results.

The Entomological Society of America (ESA) Student Debates is an annual student competition at the ESA Annual Meeting organized by Student Debates Subcommittee (SDS) members of the ESA Student Affairs Committee. In conjunction with the 2023 ESA Annual Meeting theme, 'Insects and influence: Advancing entomology's impact on people and policy', the theme of this year's student debate was 'Addressing emerging issues in entomology'. With the aid of ESA membership, the SDS selected the following debate topics: (1) Should disclosure of artificial intelligence large language models in scientific writing always be required? and (2) Is it more important to prioritize honey bee or native pollinator health for long-term food security within North America? Four student teams from across the nation, composed of 3-5 student members and a professional advisor, were assigned a topic and stance.

Coaxial wire-based laser metal deposition is a versatile and efficient additive process that can achieve a high deposition rate in the manufacturing of complex structures. In this paper, a three-beam coaxial wire system is studied, with particular attention given to the effects of the deposition direction and laser beam orientation on the resulting bead geometry symmetry. With the three-beam laser delivery, the laser spot pattern is not always symmetric with respect to the deposition direction.

The safety and genetic diagnostic accuracy of amniocentesis have been well-established through numerous large-scale multicenter studies for procedures before 24 weeks, but comprehensive data on late amniocentesis remain sparse.
