Microglia are macrophage cells residing in the brain, where they exert a key role in neuronal protection. Through the gut-brain axis, metabolites produced by gut commensal microbes can influence brain functions, including microglial activity. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) is a key regulator of the oxidative stress response in microglia, controlling the expression of cytoprotective genes.

Spatial Anxiety (SA) can be defined as the fear and apprehension experienced during tasks that require spatial thinking and may negatively impact the execution of daily actions. Although it has been explored in several research fields, limited research has explored the effects of SA on specific driving behaviours. In the current study, it was hypothesised that the severity of SA affects risky driving behaviours, and that this relationship is mediated by the driver's self-regulation abilities.

Neurodegenerative disorders are the main cause of cognitive and physical disabilities, affect millions of people worldwide, and their incidence is on the rise. Emerging evidence pinpoints a disturbance of the communication of the gut-brain axis, and in particular to gut microbial dysbiosis, as one of the contributors to the pathogenesis of these diseases. In fact, dysbiosis has been associated with neuro-inflammatory processes, hyperactivation of the neuronal immune system, impaired cognitive functions, aging, depression, sleeping disorders, and anxiety.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated whether 4D cardiac computed tomography (4DCCT) could enhance risk assessment and predict reverse remodeling (RRM) and mortality in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
  • A total of 608 patients, mostly elderly, were analyzed before and after TAVI to measure left and right heart dimensions, mass, ejection fraction, and strain to assess outcomes.
  • Results indicated that while immediate post-TAVI measurements didn’t predict RRM, certain 4DCCT-derived metrics, like LV mass and ejection fraction at 12 months, were significant predictors of both RRM and survival.

Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is one of the world's foremost killers, accounting for 16% of all deaths worldwide. IHD is the main cause of heart failure (HF), as it leads to pathological changes in the heart, improper pumping function and eventual death. Therapeutic interventions usually follow a systemic general strategy for all heart failure subtypes due to the lack of a deep understanding of the disease mechanisms.
