Heterogenization of Eosin Y by 3D-printing and its application in photocatalysis are reported. The approach allows a fine tuning of the photocatalyst morphology and its rapid preparation. Photocatalytic activity was evaluated through model organic reactions involving oxidation, reduction, and photosensitization pathways.

Maternal-to-fetal transmission of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has been shown to occur but whether late prenatal exposure to RSV season influences offspring postnatal RSV-lower respiratory illness (LRI) risk in early life or RSV immune status at birth is unclear. In this study, the duration of third trimester RSV season exposure was determined for 1,094 newborns of the Tucson Children's Respiratory Study (TCRS) and found to show an inverse relation to risk for first RSV-LRI in the first year. Cord blood anti-RSV antibody is related to third trimester RSV season exposure but not to first year RSV-LRI risk.

Hypromellose acetate succinate (HPMCAS) is an enteric polymer that has been successfully employed as a carrier in amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs). The aim of shape-controlled colloidal synthesis of gold (Au) is to produce Au nanoparticles (NPs) with fine control of shapes, sizes, and dispersities. We show how transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) can be used to rapidly and accurately quantify the vast ensemble of shapes of Au NPs in solution within minutes, including the synthesized nanorods, decahedra, and nanospheres. Colloidal solutions containing Au NPs were measured in TAS and their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes were classified according to the shape, wavelength and number of peaks.

The photophysical properties and the photoinitiating reactivity of a ditopic alkoxynitrostilbene were compared to those of its single branch chromophore used as a reference. Whereas a trivial additive effect is observed when considering the one- and two-photon absorption properties, a clear and very significant amplification has been highlighted for the photoreactivity of this free radical photoinitiator which was used as a hydrogen abstractor in presence of an aliphatic amine co-reactant. We indeed demonstrate that the proximity of two nitroaromatics moieties within the same molecular architecture gives rise to an original cycling mechanism based on a stepwise photo triggering of each photoredox center followed by a subsequent regenerative process.

In this paper, we demonstrate the possibility of generating arbitrary polymer microstructures covalently linked to a first polymer layer by laser direct writing. At the molecular scale, the process relies on nitroxide-mediated photopolymerization triggered by a light-sensitive alkoxyamine. In addition to the proof of concept and examples of achievable structures, including multichemistry patterns and 3D structures, this paper aims at investigating the physicochemical phenomena involved under such conditions.

This contribution aims at investigating the branching effect on the steady state, time resolved fluorescence and two-photon absorption (2PA) properties of dimethylamino and diphenylamino substituted styrylpyrimidine derivatives, by means of a combined experimental and theoretical study. In contrast to classical branched molecules with a triphenylamine central core and electron accepting groups at the periphery, here, branched molecules with reverse topology and different symmetries are examined, namely a styrylpyrimidine group is used as the electron withdrawing core and dimethylamino or diphenylamino donors are incorporated at the periphery. Besides, compared to the great majority of existing branched systems, the herein studied molecules do not have C3 symmetry.

We present herein the properties of a highly reactive type I photoinitiator with significant 2PA cross-sections (δ720nm ∼ 90 GM). We demonstrate that this new type of photocleavable system exhibits very efficient two-photon polymerization abilities with performances amplified by more than two orders of magnitude with regards to those of a commercially available type I photoinitiator (Lucirin TPO-L) which is extensively employed for multiphoton 3D stereolithography.

KinetiSol is a high-shear, fusion-based technology capable of producing stable amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) without the assistance of solvent. KinetiSol has proven successful with multiple challenging BCS class II and IV drugs, where drug properties like thermal instability or lack of appreciable solubility in volatile solvents make hot melt extrusion or spray drying unfeasible. However, there is a necessity to characterize the ASDs like those made by the KinetiSol process, in order to better understand whether KinetiSol is capable of homogeneously dispersing drug throughout a carrier in a short (<40 s) processing time.

Cells have evolved multiple mechanisms to apprehend and adapt finely to their environment. Here we report a new cellular ability, which we term "curvotaxis" that enables the cells to respond to cell-scale curvature variations, a ubiquitous trait of cellular biotopes. We develop ultra-smooth sinusoidal surfaces presenting modulations of curvature in all directions, and monitor cell behavior on these topographic landscapes.

Little is known about whether maternal immune status during pregnancy influences asthma development in the child. We measured cytokine production in supernatants from mitogen-stimulated peripheral blood immune cells collected during and after pregnancy from the mothers of children enrolled in the Tucson Infant Immune Study, a nonselected birth cohort. Physician-diagnosed active asthma in children through age 9 and a history of asthma in their mothers were assessed through questionnaires.
